Stupid Question about Grinds

Hey everyone. So I'm sure this is a really dumb question, but I'm in the middle of making my first knife (:D) and I don't know how to make the grind higher on the blade . Basically all I've done is take a mill bastard file to the edge to make a very rough convex grind, but that means the rest of the blade surface is equal thickness, that of the original steel blank. I have an angle grinder and a few files but I'm not sure how to go about putting the bevel on the knife. I'm nervous to start trying stuff because it's my first attempt and I really don't want to ruin it.

Any advice would really help. I'll try to put up some pics later today. I'd like to see what you guys and gals think.

You have to file more area of metal off, which means shallower grinds (depth wise) but longer grinds (length wise)
Hold the file at a much smaller angle, and try to keep it consistent to keep a flat grind (instead of convex)

To help you search through the forums, go into google and enter this format:

There have been some jigs that some guys have rigged up here and have posted. They look like they would help you out. Just use the searching method mentioned by go mike. Good luck and post pics and ask lots of questions.

The only reason I checked this post is because the OP is intelligent enough to ask questions! I may try to make a blade one day, once I get my first handle done of course.. Good luck, work safe, have fun, and post some pics!
