Stupid Question from Newbie

Frank has it right - martensite, magnetic - ferrite ,magnetic - austenite,nonmagnetic. And to confuse you ,if you work harden austenite you can partially convert it to martensite and that will then be partially magnetic. Nickel and cobalt are also magnetic. But I'm only a metallurgist so I too will leave the why of magnetism to a physicist.
