Prepare to laugh I think:

How about a Katana for outdoor use???

Let the flames begin!!!! :D :p

A tool to cut flesh and poke a hole in armor that MAY cut serious wood and pretty heavy compared to more suitable tools. When the armies of nation-states were still issuing swords to the rank-and-file, they also issued axes.

I've been thinking about swords and shortswords for outdoor use for a while now. Something like this: http://store.swordforum.com/angustrim/ms-2104.php looks like it would make a good outdoor blade. Angus Trim swords are renowned for their cutting ability- they out-perform katanas on a regular basis. And, if a bear finds you...!

I have a 26" waki, and a 20" machete/khuk/bolo (Bengal from ontario swords)... They pair up nicely with my "hatchet"(8lbs head, 18" handle) for bush clearing.

I'd say go with a good quality machete, like a Martindale etc.basically its a short sword.

Actually, I don't think it's that stupid of an idea at all. I would feel pretty safe with one as a defensive tool- no ammunition to run out of in a survival situation, and with a katana and some training, you have some incredible cutting power against some critter that insists you're part of the food chain. The thing that would be freaky though, would be if you got caught trudging through the woods with a sword strapped to your belt by law enforcement. Try to explain THAT away lol

"Oh, you mean THIS thing, officer? Well...see, um, I couldn't afford a machete. So, I, uh, bought the next best thing I could find at the fleamarket. Yeah, that's it. Ah ha ha ha." *cue nervous laughter*

I guess they'd rather find you with that than a gun though. Well, I take that back- the way laws are now, they may even give you worse of a fine than if you did have a gun. lol

At the end of the movie Shaolin Soccer there is a brief scene with the guy doing a rather nice looking job of hedge trimming with a katana. The backflips looked rather unlikely and would probably not stand up to OSHA scrutiny, but it was rather entertaining. Of course the banana peel was funnier, but I could have gone all year without seeing the egg scene..

If your asking if I would use one...no!
But if you think about it a katana would be a great tool for cutting foilage, arnt they suposed to be able to cut mature bamboo with one swing? I just dont like the idea of being seen with one. Even in Nothern Canada (NWT) sertain things bring bad looks, same is same with other countries. Bad looks arnt in my order.
But what the hell try it out, I'll bet you it works!

Don't get so stuck on katanas, everyone. Go to the link I provided earlier and peruse around. Angus Trim swords far out-perform katanas in any kind of test-cutting. Guys use these things on 1/2" plywood all the time (although that's not specifically endorsed.) And european swords just look a lot cooler!
