Being new to these types of knives, I was wondering if there was a difference between "Gurka House" and "Himalayan Imports" knives. They seem to be the exact same thing, but I saw two separate forums.

Thanks.

Warthog,

First let me welcome you to the forums. We're always happy to see a new face and hope you find our little corner of the world a comfortable place that you'll visit often.

The Gurkha House & Himalayan Imports Khukuris are, at the present time, produced in different shops in Nepal. The khukuris from both companies are hand made by master craftsmen and both carry lifetime warranties. You will find that both companies offer a wide range of styles ranging from light to heavy, short to long and elegant to brutal.

The final decision on which to choose will boil down to your personal tastes. You can't go wrong with either a GH or an HI Khukuri.

Our forums are somewhat different but both have one important thing in common; our love of Khukuris. Feel free to look around and ask as many questions as you wish. We were all newbies once and we all come here to learn from each other.

What is the difference? True, they are both made by skilled craftsmen, but the GH are cheaper than the HI knives. I want to get the 18" AK. From GH it is $109. From HI it is $145. That's a nice difference. I would rather get the cheaper knife, but I don't want to downgrade in quality.

So, from an non-biased expert point of view, how different are they in terms of quality? I know this is a challenging question because you are of GH, but I just want the truth

. I don't want to get a cheaper knife and have it not last as long as the slightly more expensive one.

Thanks again.

Warthog,

The GH & HI Khukuris will both last at least 2 lifetimes. The quality of each is, at this point in time, seperated only by personal opinion. About a year ago there were some quality problems on some of the GH Khuks. This was recognized, addressed and is no longer the case. HI has also been quick to recognize and address any quality problems it has encountered. The quality control of both companies is now second to none and the Khukuris being sold by GH & HI are nothing short of magnificent. I believe the price differential now has to do with marketing, manufacturing costs and sales volume issues, not quality.

As I stated before, your choice of purchase will boil down to personal taste in the end. You can't go wrong with either choice. If a Khukuri from either company ever fails, you'll get a replacement or a refund. Both company owners are honorable men who value their reputations and their customers.

Thanks, Blackdog. I was about to say "nevermind" because of Lt. Dan's thread about choosing a khukuri. I saw that everyone thought their khukuri's were top notch and so concluded that they are not at all worse than HI. Thanks again for answering my questions, Blackdog. Very helpful

Hi Warthog (nice handle, by the way). Blackdog is right in every respect here. However, there is a difference, I have noticed it, because I have got blades from GH and HI. It's an abstract difference. Cannot define it... Whatever you choose, you will be doing the right thing. I get mine sent to the UK, airmail. I take a big risk, but totally trust both Craig and Uncle Bill.
From one forumite to another, welcome.
David

Thanks

I know them well, I used to watch them training on the way to work. One of the best and most impressive military work outs I ever saw was a squadron of Warthogs, flying at 0 feet, actually below the road I was driving on, supporting a troop drop from some Hercs. Don't know where they were from, but I used to see them in North Yorkshire. Also I recall the time I've been driving across the moors and one of them sneaked up on me... I was driving along deep in thought, no one around for miles. I hear a noise and I glance in the mirror... Nearly drove off the road in surprise! The mirror was full of Warthog! I could even see the pilot laughing at my reaction.
What has this to do with khurkuri's? Nothing. Just being neighbourly. Well, ok just a bit about khurkuri's. If you want a cheetlang, like the one Berkley posted the pic of, you have to get up real early in the AM! Once Craig gets a consignment in - and they're small consignments- they run straight out of his office. I have a beaut, with a rosewood handle.

Warthog,

There is a reply post to yours on the other thread, "Open survey for heavy-duty, 1-handed khukuri". It probably would have been better off here for you, but I answered it there, as that's where your ??? were posted.

...another silly question
smile.gif

The lengths shown on the GH website ARE the blade lengths, right?

Warthog

Warthog,

The length shown on the GH website is the overall length of the Khukuri. A 16" AK will be roughly 16" from the blade tip to the butt cap of the handle. My 16" AK has 10 1/2" of blade and 5 1/2" of handle.

BTW, next to the DC-3 the Warthog is my all time favorite aircraft. There's just something about straight-wing airplanes that reminds me of simpler times.

Quotes...

To David,
Regarding flying at 'O feet,' famous quote from would reknowned flyer
Col. Kabby Fwigenknigen,
"The record for flying low can only be tied, not broken."

On second thought, if I were David, I make-up a bumpersticker which read: "Strafe me again and I flick a booger on your canopy!"

I like the Warthog too, but one USAF general I met explained the A-10 in a unique way...

"...Damn things need bird-strike cages over their exhausts."

Despite it all, they're the toughest things you'll ever see. Next time you're at an air show during an A-10 demo, imagine you're the enemy. You're on-foot and get a running start from the middle of the airfield. Watch closely and consider if you, or the A-10 driver would live to see the sun rise.

The truth hurts.

I just Emailed Lalit. We'll see what he says about the decomissioned khukuris. I also ordered 10 khukuris with a service-type nylon sheath covering (SN1s of course). We'll see if they get here

Here's the partial answer to our question about "retired" khukuris:

Thank you for your email dated the 13 Nov 00. Service No 1 khukuri which
we also say "issue khukuri" is a recored item on the clothing scale of a
Gurkha soldier therefore it must be returned to the store on retirement and
any item on payment such as "Jungle Khukuri or say No 2 khukuri" can be
retained by the outgoing soldier. But for sake of argument what we usually
do is that - we keep the "issue one" and return "No 2 Khukuri" to the
store as the Army is not that strict in this matter.

That was a quote from Lalit. I didn't edit it so you could get more of a flavor of his answer. But in a nutshell, the SN1 - issued - is supposed to be returned to the british supply system. However, Gurkhas usually keep their issue khukuri for sentimental reasons and return another khukuri to the supply system.

My next question has already been emailed: what do the british do with all the retired khukuris, be they SN1s or "replacement" khukuris? Stay tuned for the answer.
