Stupidest Knife collection

What's wrong with minis? My daughter needs something in her doll houses and you don;t expect her to use Chinese knives in that kitchen? Why doesn;t Tom Haslinger do a set of mini-kitchen knives? After all, she (now) uses his real sized ones...........

Neat miniatures Mr. Possum. There is a huge tradition in miniatures of all types and they are an accepted art form. I've seen more miniatures in art museums than knives. Probably more accepted as art than knives. Maybe you guys don't realize this, but minatures run the gamut from furniture to houses to Faberge eggs...oh and of course knives and guns.

Hey Kohai999, why so rude in your comments? It's just as easy to believe your collecting mission is stupid and more than slightly egotistical. On another post you indicated your collecting goal was to get two knives from each of 50 makers and then go around the country displaying your collection to introduce people to knives as art. Got your two Scagels yet? Sounds like a pretty useless collection, except to make you feel like you're a rich expert...or is it diletante. Maybe you dream of giving it to a museum and having your name displayed...until you're dead and the collection is sold or goes to storage. In the interim, I'll bet you barely use any of those 100 knives, probably no more than someone uses a miniature.

Personally I think anyone's collection can appear stupid to someone else. That's because no matter how we try to fool ourselves, we all know that collecting is not logical. We try to invent reasons for our collection to justify it or make it more fun, but you'll never convince Mr. Spock the vulcan that it's not stupid. Collecting is an emotional activity, and really none of us should call someone elses collection stupid, because ours is just a stupid from a different perspective. I freely admit my collection has no theme, it is stupid and subject to my highly emotional whims. What is really stupid is when you start to believe in your collection more than reality; then your collection becomes an addiction that can be as destructive as crack.

My collection is so stupid I can't even call it a collection. Just an accumulation. No rhyme, no reason, just a bunch of knives. I'm like the melting pot of the knifeworld.

Even someone who collects FM knives has a leg up on me as far as collecting goes, they know what they like and take the steps needed to acquire them. When I have the cash, I just buy something :p

But this is the way I like it, no pressure and all fun. And that is really what any type of collecting should be. If it goes beyond that, I'd find a new hobby.

Function: noun

Etymology: Italian, from present participle of dilettare to delight, from Latin dilectare -- more at DELIGHT
1 : an admirer or lover of the arts
2 : a person having a superficial interest in an art or a branch of knowledge : DABBLER
synonym see AMATEUR

In the one usage of the word, you would be correct, many of us would. In the second, you would be very much mistaken, I am a professional. I am, like many others here, not rich. It is entirely possible that I have a stupid knife collection and a stupid goal. At least I have a goal, and as you indicated, you do not.

I am rude, because, well, I am rude. If we ever meet(Blade in Atlanta, perhaps?) you will see this in person. Maybe you could give me lessons in positive social behavior?

Do you actually wear brown shoes, or is this a reference to being a naval aviator?

Enjoy those minis, more for you! :D

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

Steve, remember we discussed how important it was for you to not stop taking your meds? :)

I agree in part, that in a world full of real knives, I wouldn't want to collect miniatures, but, I can understand that some people do like them, and I honestly don't think they're stupid or a waste of time, like was said, they are pure art and an excercise of skill, it's not that easy to make a knife that small. My mother in law collects spoons from gift shops, my mother and step father collect cheap owl figurines from the places they vacation to, it takes all kinds.

I used to collect Hot Wheels, which are, well, minature cars, they don't get me anywhere, but I still like them.

I think there may be some things people collect that are more objectively silly, cheap spoons comes to mind, but, as I said originally, as long as someone is collecting a knife, good for them, hopefully they will learn that there are better knives out there to spend their money on, but, not everyone has the time, energy or understanding to become a serious collector, and that's where the FM comes in.

Steve,

In the olden days, I used to be an acerbic ruthless sob, who firmly believed that fools should NOT be suffered, but eviserated! However, I am older, kinder and gentler now. But perhaps if I reverted to form, we could arrange a steel cage match and sell tickets, that way we could afford to buy more knives.

Best,
Peter

OK, one of you could afford more knives. The other's heirs may wish to sell off your existing knives!

Thanks Kohai999 for the spelling lesson. It was mis-spelled on purpose as an exercise in my ability to predict human behavior. Other mis-spellings are not on purpose but a window into my incompetencies.

By the way, I checked your profile, you don't put yourself forward in there as being a knife expert. If you are a proffessional, and not a dabbler, where is your website, your store, your catalog, I'd like to see your collection and your wares.

Your profile says you play billiards, if you truly play the game, then play some asians and you will get some good lessons in proper social behavior. I am not asian, but I do frequent pool halls, and the asian billiard players are some of the most impressive and polite.

Brownshoe comes from Frank Zappa..."Brown Shoes don't make it."

"Be a loyal plastic robot
For a world that doesn't care.
Smile at every ugly.
Shine your shoes and cut your hair.

Be a jerk and go to work.

Do your job and do it right.
Life's a ball.
TV Tonight.
Do you love it?
Do you hate it?
There it is
The way you made it."

By the way KOHAI999, do you have your two Scagels? It wasn't until I went to the Randall Musuem and saw a whole bunch of Scagels together that I realized that with knives, the best art is often found in simplicity.

Wrong, the fight would be staged and fixed, so that we could skim all the money from all you rubes without anyone getting hurt. It is the NYC way.

Brownshoe,

Every knife that I collect maxes out at $1,000. Some good buys don't even break $500.00. It is part of the inclusive, not exclusive nature of what I am trying to accomplish. Part of the goal, is to show people that it does not have to be prohibitively expensive.

The business is called High Hat Knives. Open for 3 days, once a year, at the OKCA in Eugene, OR. My business partner will be manning the tables this year, after 10 years, I'm taking this one off. The shop was in Seattle, WA from 1994 to 1997, started by doing all the area gun shows, built up to 3, at the end, moved into a retail space, 900 sf. Lost the space when the building got sold, and didn't have the $50,000 to rebuild. Still have most of the stock, though. Anything you might be looking for in particular? No miniatures, though. :D

I'm no knife expert, but some might, and have called me one. Joe Kertzman inferred as such in an interview with me two years ago in Blade magazine.I design knives for V-Tech, and Ram Instrument, as well as other things. I just do what I do, just like you, just like any collector.

Played many asians in billiards. I left the APA as a 3. I was losing more than I won. I said I liked the game, I didn't say I was any good. :D This is SoCal, asians could have their own league. Some are great, some suck, some are polite, some are arrogant as all get out. Just like anyone, from any group.

I don't deny anybody the right to say what they like on the Blade Forums. Some like what I say, how I say it. Some, like you, don't. Youse are all free to say what you want. I am trying not to personally attack anybody publicly, Ari the meds are starting to kick in. Interesting song reference by a fairly obscure, WAY underappreciated artist. Maybe you are not as dumb as I look. ;)

This is twice now, that you have called me onto the carpet. I'm not sure why, but maybe you can explain. We can go offline if you like.

This has gotten OT. By some of your statements, I will agree that knife collecting in general is stupid, UNLESS you make a lot of money doing it, and enjoy it. The question was not if knife collecting is stupid or not, but what the "Stupider" form of knife collecting is. We still do not have a winner.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Now now, boys and girls. Can't we all just get along??? :D

It still fascinates me that people collect ANYTHING.

I better not think it's stupid, or I would quickly be looking for a new line of work.

I thank my lucky stars that there are people with a passion to own the things I have a passion to create. This is about as close to magic as you can get.

While Steven and I have become friends... I do have to disagree with him to an extent. I don't really get miniatures myself, but can appreciate that people like them.

I know several people that would think he is stupid for buying the jelly-roll fighter from me because he spent a LOT of money on it, and he won't use it (unless in a pinch ;) ).

I don't think he's stupid. I love the knife, and am ever so glad that he loves it. But some would not. I suppose the defining difference here is that Steven does not mind if you think he's stupid. But most of you are too tactful to call it out ;)

Some like blondes, some like brunettes. My dad liked a red-head...and still has for 32 years. Some would slit their rists before marrying a red-head. But that doesn't make him stupid. He liked what he liked.

Good thing, or my good looking and charming self would not be around to make knives for you non-stupid people to buy :D :p :D

Like what you like, buy what you want... our ride on this planet is pretty short in the scheme of things, so make sure you enjoy it!!!

I think this has been a pretty damn funny thread myself.

While Steven's comments could be construed as being negative I thought they were more humorous jabs at a segment of the knife industry he feels is odd. Maybe I'm reading him wrong but I'm usually pretty good at interpreting posts.

I think its stupid collecting anything, which is why I'm in denial about my "accumulation" (guns and knives). I never keep knives that I don't take out and use, some more than others but if they don't cut stuff they're gone.

The only exception to that rule is items passed down by family.

It still fascinates me that people collect ANYTHING.

Humans are, in fact, the only animals that collect.

Someone will now say, "What about squirrels? They collect nuts." But it's not collecting in the same way people collect things. No squirrel actively attempts to collect examples of every type of nut in the world. Nor does any squirrel specialize and only collect one specific type of nut. Squirrels don't study their nuts, attempt to learn about them, their history, how they were made, etc. Squirrels don't fly all over the world to "Nut Shows" or shop on eBay looking for the ellusive nut they need. Squirrels accumulate food for the winter. That's all. It is man alone who collects things, be it knives, or stamps, or coins, or beenie babies. It's a significant part of what sets us apart from the rest of the creation.

as a matter of fact, I have seen some squirrels absolutely fascinated with their nuts. Never been to a nut show, but I am hearing about them on the news lately.

"It's a significant part of what sets us apart from the rest of the creation".

That and the fact that we can mate face to face, and female humans are capable of orgasm.ROTFLMAO!

Nick and I are friends, but he frequently disagrees with me. Probably one of the reasons that we are friends.

Chad, I am serious about 30% of the time, and about the same with my comments. I DO hate miniatures, and I DO think that they are a waste of time.

That said, I hate a lot of things, including Brussells sprouts, but would not criticize anyone who ate them, just someone who would tell me that I HAD to eat them, or they would kill my family.

Best Regards,

Let's mix complete unredeemed crap, embodying everything wrong with Chinese production ca. 1992, with details so small you need a scanning electron microscope to read the tattoo on the ass of the woman engraved in the bolster of a Wild West scene featuring horses and tractors, advertising Red Man chewin' tobacco., each one different...

So, can I consider this a firm order? When will you be sending the down payment? :p :D

Thanks for the kind words, Don. I gotta get out in the shop and make some more one of these days, so I can sell a few but still keep something to show off. At this point I'm still spending most of my "free time" with my 7 week old daughter. You had some mighty nice knives on your table too, but I think that goes without saying. :)

When I was young, we all thought Miller's collection of hawk casts (undigested vomitted remains from a hawk's lunch) was the stupidest collection. I mean, it's hawk vomit. Looks cool with all the skeletal remains, but it's still hawk vomit. Then he classifies them and gets them displayed in a natural history museum. They were then requested by the Smithsonian. One man's weird collection today could become science and/or history.

Great point Brownshoe... reminds me of a guy I met as a kid that had a collection of "owl pellets." He was just fascinated by the nasty hairball that had little mice and bird bones in them. I thought it was disgusting.

Well, people to do and things to see... ;)
