Stupidest question ever (knife uses)!

I also transitioned from knife lover to chef.

always loved knives but drawing/art was more my skill.

Then I found out sushi is a bit of both art and food, sharp knives are mandatory ;)

My knife hobby got me into cooking...somewhat:

Agreed. Cut up some food with them and eat it. You probably have a kitchen full of junk knives. Use your good ones in there! Or go buy a good kitchen knife. Slice tomatoes paper thin. Split watermelons. Learn to bone out a chicken breast. Take the skin off a salmon fillet. Peel an apple in one piece. Million things you could be doing in there. Make a radish rose.

It seems like people, even here, think that kitchen knife use "doesn't count." Odd.

While I understand your quest to make your knives a more useful part of your life, just don't get caught up in the mentality that you have to come up with uses in order to justify owning them. There's nothing wrong with collecting knives for the sheer joy of holding them and looking at them.

Do yourself a favor and by a nice chef knife and paring knife. It will give you an excuse to reasearch, buy and use new knives. Ladies generally appreciate a guy that can cook to boot. I am married and do almost all of the cooking in my house. I find it very relaxing, and the food seems to taste better when you know if is from your efforts.

I have been cooking since I began living on my own (more years than I care to admit) :D

Thanks for all the replies (even HardTripper - as I said in my original post, I anticipated some smart-@ss answers. Fortunately for me, your's was the only one! And to answer your question:
"You have a bunch of knives and you dont know what to do with them? Why do you have them? What were you thinking when you bought them?"
I was thinking, "Man I love knives. I think it would be fun to start a collection. I'll get a few good ones and rotate through them for every day use, I'll get some really special ones to display as my form of "art" (frowned on by some members - Cypress), and I'll pass some down to my boys when they get old enough."

Special thanks to De Plano. I got a stiffy reading the whittling threads! That's going to be fun.

Thanks also to silenthunterstudios. I'll have to check out some of your recommendations.

KnottyEagle - haven't had time to read your entire thread or whatch the videos yet, but it looks very interesting!

gremlin moon - ROTFLMAO!

G. scott H. - I should have added your quote when replying to HardTripper. Thanks for the understanding and encouragement.

For those that suggested cooking - I can't make toast without messing it up, but there's no reason I can't try the "peeling" when my wife cooks! Also, I enjoy sharpening and just "handling" knives; I bet she has a bunch of dull ones that I could "tune up."

Thanks again to ALL.
I hope to continue with the hobby and the forum (and maybe even, in time, post some useful answers to help others).

That's pretty much the way I look at it

I have beaters, favorites I use for EDC (940-121, 530-1303, etc.), fixed for hunting, and I started collecting some favorite BM designs that I hold in the same light as some art lovers hold their Picasso's LOL.. Trollers will always be trollers, pick which knive's suit you and enjoy them in your own way.

Oh, I never said art was bad ;) I mean, I've dated a lot of women, and the prettier they are, the more "useless" they seem to be, but that hasn't stopped me from chasing models.

I have only seen one knife that I would own and never use because of its beauty. Luckily, my best good friend owns it (he's not a collector), so I have access to viewing pleasures at any point. He claims it'll end up in my collection some day, but neither of us is in a hurry. It's a knife made by Michael Morris out of an old file. Michael said he only made 4 of these knives. Picture pulled from his website:

You use a knife to cut with and you choose the size that you are comfortable with based on use, your lifestyle, and environmental circumstances.

I don't any whittling. But I use a knife every single day for something. That is what they are for... to use to cut things.

Here's something fun for you to try. Pick up a long stick. You can even find them laying around in cities. Take it home and get out one of your SAKs. You have to have at least one. The thin blade is perfect for shaving the bark off. A SAK with the saw will also flatten knotty areas. Smooth with sandpaper and you have yourself a walking stick! I even stain mine. I have sticks and long staffs. I sometimes go into the woods and cut a sapling and shave that down. It will even get you interested in tools like the spokeshave.

You can do mini-knife reviews/tests,cut a bunch of different materials tape, nylon, wood, cardboard, carpet ,etc... with the different steels you have ,sharpened with different technics and then help us make better buying choices, you may even turn into a mini-Ankerson (which is of course a good thing)
