Stupidity Can Be Expensive/Update!

UPDATE/EDIT: Well one of the caretakers of one of the other residents of my complex (as I think I mentioned several residents here have some mental issues and need daily caretakers for help) found my box o' knives in someone else's place and knew it wasn't there's, after some door-knocking they managed to return it to me. :)

All's well that ends well, although now I feel bad I thought poorly of the thief, as I doubt there was any ill intention on the part of this resident, just happened to wander in whilst I was away. It happens sometimes when I am home preparing dinner or something, they'll wander into the wrong apartment. Anyway just wanted to share the good news, thanks guys.

Hi guys,

In the several years I've lived on my own now, I've never once forgotten to lock up the place after going out. Or I should say, until now I haven't. I can only call it stupidity, really, because there's just no other explanation. Got back tonight to find I'd shockingly forgotten. And of course, the one time I forget, a bit of thieving occurs, in the form of my "regular EDC" box, which is a clear plastic thing, I just use it to store knives in normal rotation, as most others are in a locked box that is heavy and difficult for me to get to so I don't, very often. In a way I'm very lucky not more was taken, although why someone would see a box and think, "knives, cool, I'll have that." I have no idea. If I were a thief I'd take the DVDs, TV, various other stuff people like.

All in all could have been much worse, I didn't lose any rare or one of kind knives, and my total loss only comes to about $800. A lot to be sure, it'll take awhile to get back up there, but it's a lesson well-learned and I'm thankful that's it. A hat that belonged to my late grandfather is kept in the same closet and they didn't take that. It isn't worth anything monetarily, but I'd rather lose the knives than that, even though it pains me to lose the knives of course.

I'll never be so careless again. But I'll be kicking myself for a good while. It's the most bizarre thing ever, just thought I'd share.

Now I might get a bit paranoid and lock everything up, but then I'd worry people would be more enticed by "hm, a locked box" than something else. Anyway I think as long as I am more careful and less stupid, it's a one off.

Be well friends.

Damn...I'm really sorry to hear this, brother. There are few things in this world that disgust me more than petty thieves. I wish you the best.

As far as the knives themselves, keep an eye on local pawn shops, Craigslist and sites like that.

Have you filed a police report yet?

Having dealt with a couple of break-ins a few years back, I know what you're feeling. I will say that in my case, if we had left the door unlocked the cost to us would have been much less. Stolen stuff + getting broken out doors and windows replaced = more expensive than just stolen stuff. It cost more for the repairs than we lost in stuff.

Not yet, the good thing is my current regular EDC rotation was all production stuff that, while expensive as a whole, aren't very expensive as individual pieces (It's really rare for me to be able to/want to spend on a knife over $50-70, the most expensive one in there was probably the Griptilian) so while it'll take a little time to actually replace them, it won't be difficult to actually get them, per se. No worries man. If they'd taken the box where most of my collection is stored I'd be way sadder... I hope that never happens.

You make a good point there that I had not previously considered. A good silver lining in my case, thanks mate. I still wish they'd just satisfied themselves with some darn DVDs or something, ach. I'm just doing my best to not let this make me paranoid about safety/stuff.

Thanks Sonny.

I'm looking on the bright side, whilst thinking to myself the sheer bizarro nature of it. I mean I guess stuff like that is easily pawned and all, but still, unless you're a "discerning thief", you'll pawn that off at something like maybe $150-$200 for the lot, most people don't know or care knife values much. Oh well. I'm glad it was due to carelessness rather than something that happened despite my best efforts.

Two years ago our house was broken into while we were at the evening Ash Wednesday church service. Only gone about an hour but they busted the window on the back door. They got an iPad, a wii and some misc jewelry. If they take something seriously expensive and there's no sign of forced entry (ie broken door jam, window, etc) the insurance company won't like that.

Sorry to hear man. Losing the stuff wasn't nearly as big a deal for us as knowing some scumbag was snooping around our house. It was tough for the kids.

Waltzed in and only took a box of your knives and nothing else? Sounds like someone knew what they were looking for.

Last year we had $100k of stuff stolen from the back of our SUV on the way to a three-day religious function. My suits, all my wife's clothes and jewelry (including our wedding ring), a bunch of the kids clothes, my laptop and other assorted electronics, my CPAP machine... All because we decided to run to dinner before unloading at the hotel. I hate to call it a miracle, but just about the time we were going to pack up what little we had left and go home and not go to the function that weekend, the police called and had found 100% of our stuff. It was a totally bizarre coincidence too, they had been pulling the guy over for an expired license plate when he decided to flee. They had all our stuff in police custody before we even knew it was gone, but didn't find us until the next day. Thankfully I put my business card on all our stuff so they could easily figure out it wasn't the perps stuff.

Meh, I doubt it, no one outside family and select friends a few States (or countries) away know I even collect. That said most of the people in my building are mentally handicapped but, I highly doubt that would cause them to root through things, find knives and take them. I had a tablet stolen once by someone in the building but that's because USPS left it outside my door while I was gone instead of taking it to their local office and keeping it there for me.

Somebody had you scoped out. Either that or it was right beside the door and they ran outta time, just snagged the nearest thing. I'd have a hard time believing whoever took it didn't know about it.

Hey Red, what knives were lost?
I know several of us trawl different exchange and sales places, maybe if you tell us we can be on lookout for you....

Glad you got 100% return! Would've hated for you to lose all of that, particularly the rings. A couple of my friends chose to have "ring tattoos" for their wedding bands, so I guess they are theft-proof. Or if not, the theft would be a lot more painful I guess. ;)

BOTH:thumbup: I hate thieves,otta be a bounty on em.;)

No bounty in Texas, but from what I hear there is no bag limit. In this great state you have the right to use deadly force to protect your life, freedom, property, and those of your loved ones. In some cases also that of your neighbors! All you have to have is an agreement with your neighbors that you agree to watch each other's property. Hear me criminals? It's open season.... Come getcha some!!!

Lost Cosmonaut - forgive my ignorance, but why wouldn't your wedding rings be on your fingers? Mine hasn't left my finger since the day I got married (17 years ago) except to wash my hands.

Thanks Bobber.

Nothing too amazing, I don't own amazing knives
Regular Sheepsfoot Griptilian
Case yellow full size sodbuster
Buck 110
Kershaw Thistle
Rat-1
Spydie Resilience
Cold Steel Med Voyager
Cold Steel AK-47
Cold Steel Pocket Bushman
Opinel 10 (cheap and I have extras)
CRKT Hissatsu
Buck Omni 12pt folder
Kershaw Leek
Emerson/Kershaw CQC-6
Svord Peasant
Cold Steel Med Recon 1
Benchmade Barrage
Utilitac II (also have a back-up, no big deal)
Lion Steel SR-1
Ontario Hossom Retribution Med Folder

As you can see mostly nothing special or heartbreaking, just the last two really. The Sr-1 I'd just picked up a few days ago having saved for it for a few months, and the Retribution seems to be (for me, anyway) more difficult to find these days. Other than that, nothing rare or special like I said. Even with those, after a few months I'll likely pick up another SR-1, and if I come across a Retribution and can afford it, I'll snag it. Thanks for asking friend, but don't go out of your way scouring exchanges, as almost all of this stuff is on the cheaper side and I'll replace them soon-ish. I keep discontinued models elsewhere and they are safe.
