My son, living in KY, has asked for a folding knife for Cmas. I checked the most recent KY knife laws that are as clear as mud. Best as I can tell, anything under three inches, non-auto, is legal. Over 3 inches is legal IF its description states it as a hunting knife.

Ok, Covering all the bases, thoughts on a good folder, under 3" (not many out there that I can find), that he can carry at work/home/driving? Not interested in pretty. Interested in longevity and sturdiness.

Thanks!!

ps. And, if you know of a hunting folder, 3 inches and over, that you find outstanding, go ahead and throw that in as well.

Spyderco Techno, benchmade mini bone collector. Delica, there are lots

For a bigger one the full sized bone collector. Its a hunting knife.

Cant hardley beat the Buck 110 for first folding knife
Spyderco Delica- great knife
Spyderco Dragonfly II- Great knife
Just about any Kershaw will hold up to day to day usage too...

Go Classic:

Buck 110, described as folding hunter
Buck 55, described as folding hunter

Many of the Swiss Army Knives are under 3", the Alox versions are very sturdy.

There are a TON of excellent knives that fit your description. First things first, what is your price range? The choices vary greatly based on price and you can get a great knife for around $50-60 (delica or mini grip) or for $400 (small sebenza). A bit more info will get you some more specific answers, otherwise people are going to just blurt out their favorite sub 3" folder.

The Buck 110 is one of the most widely carried - and copied - knives in the world. But many people find it heavy for pocket carry. More often than not you'll see them carried in a belt sheath.

If you want a single blade, I like the Benchmade mini Rittergrip. The Benchmade mini-griptilian is less expensive and has the same handle and the same great axis lock. The difference is in the blade shape. I prefer the Rittergrip blade.

If you want an Victorinox Alox slip joint, I recommend the Farmer. It has the basic scout knife/army knife tools: blade, reamer, can opener, bottle opener, screwdrivers, plus an excellent saw. All in a pocket friendly package.

Any of the Sage knives from Spyderco. I'm a big fan of the old style Case knives but they do lead to a collecting obsession most cases. Have you looked at the Kershaw Blur knives they are great knives and came in many options and price ranges even a S30V one that is a sweet deal at 60-70 bucks.
