Good morning y'all.

I'm working on a hidden-tang project where I'd really like a large block (at least 5"x2"x1") of white handle material. I'm planning some fluting, and would prefer a material that's dense, sturdy and isn't prone to chipping. Years ago I acquired some Masecraft alternative ivory that looks fairly decent... but when dropped, tends to chip. I'd be OK with giving white paper micarta a shot... it appears that Jantz and Sheffield may sell larger blocks. As a last resort, I also might be willing to work with white G10... though I know it will torture my files, and I generally dislike working with G10 in any size larger than a liner or spacer.

Any recommendations/sources?

truivory?

Thanks for the recommendation Ron. In the past, Chuck over at AKS has spoken of Tru Ivory as one of the better looking ivory substitutes... but I don't remember ever getting much detail on the durability of it. Have you worked with it yourself? Have you encountered any problems with chipping?

You might be able to find some white Corian (spelling?) The stuff they make fake stone countertops out of...

I contacted the company via email, I may order some just to check it out. Some of the gun forums have negative things to say about it cracking.

You might try Jeff over at Jepcho. He has some artificial ivory I love working with. He usually sells in scale sets but he might be able to get you a big chunk

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm leaning toward a large block of paper micarta. Thanks again.
