Sub 200 dollar perfection. Why I love spyderco.

I've got two kershaws (leek and skyline), and one benchmade (710)..... getting my first spyderco next weekend at the gun show.

probably will be para2

can't wait to see what all the buzz is about

Right, but shouldn't that just be the Perrin PT then? Or just the PPT? But Perrin PPT would mean Perrin, Perrin, Perotti and Thiel.

Thanks guys.

The GB and PPT are both made in Taiwan. I prefer knives to be made in the USA, I prefer getting anything I can made in the USA. Generally IMO, especially being involved in manufacturing, USA brings the best quality available. I will say however, both the PPT and the GB have PERFECT blade centering while the USA made Military is not quite centered. I don't care in the least about slightly off centered blades, just giving an example.

To me, my Temperance 2 is a sub 200 dollar perfection. Heck, it is even a sub $300 perfection!

I like that knife, but honestly, I'm not a huge fan of vg10.
For a knife of that size, VG-10 works just fine. It's not a blade for heavy duties. And in my experience it is tougher than a lot of S30V blades of similar size/shape. (VG-10 bends, S30V chips). Of course, I'd love one in CPM-3V, but then I'd lose the excellent stain resistance and easy of shaperning of VG-10...

What's wrong with VG-10 in your opinion?

It's not that I hate VG-10, it's just i'd prefer at a minimum s30v or better. I would gladly trade in ease of sharpening for wear resistance any day. I find s30v and m4 will cut forever, they will not always be shaving sharp, but they will just keep cutting and cutting. Vg10 for me doesn't, it'll take a very keen edge, then dull and get duller and duller.

CPM-M4 is a whole different animal... But don't you agree that S30V is more brittle and prone to chipping than VG-10? (Beefy stocks of metal like Striders don't count, I'm talking about knives made for cutting).

I only had one issue with VG-10 (Spyderco Caly3 with a factory edge, I had a few small dents after cutting hard formica, after resharpening it was gone and no more problems). On the other hand, I lost many tips on my S30V blades, not not mention a lot of chipping. So to me it's a trade-off, toughness over wear resistance. I'd rather have my knives with no dents and chips, although I bit duller...

It does depend on the knife, I do feel s30v is a little more prone to chipping, but I choose what I'm doing with the knife depending on the steel. I would never pry anything with my military, but i'd pry open a crate with one of my busses. . Most of the stuff I cut throughout a day isn't going to chip out s30v, even in thinner blades with thin geometry. I cut cardboard, zip ties, packaging etc.. I also scrape tape/stickers off of bar stock. I've never had a chipping problem with s30v.

To be perfectly honest with you, I'd prefer all my folders in CPM m4.

I don't pry or perform any type of abuse with my folders, but I lost many tips by letting they slip off my hand and hitting the carpet floor on my room (with concrete beneath). When the same happened with my VG-10 blades, the maximum damage I've ever seen is a bent tip, which was easily taken care of on my Sharpmaker. Maybe I'm unlucky as hell, but I don't have a very positive expericence with S30V as far as toughness go (the exception to this rule is my ZT0121, which is built like a nuclear shelter). I do not like have to treat steel as glass.

man, try AUS8. I've had a few with it and it was unchippable. It would roll, it would blunt, but no matter what, no chipping.

Spyderco certainly makes a great value knife.

Personally, I do like VG-10 for a lot of tasks, but if I was going to offer a suggestion to the original poster...You simply MUST try a Spyderco with ZDP-189. The FRN Stretch is an amazing slicer...but you would have to put it in the sub-100 dollar range!

unit, i've been considering a stretch, but I don't feel like spending 200+ on the cf version on ebay. How well do you think it would hold up to about 20 inclusive on normal cutting tasks (zip ties, clamshell, soft material, cardboard)?

20 inclusive is crazy acute for ZDP-189, unless you stick with food prep. The stock angles already are on the boarderline limit if you ask me...
