Sub 3" blade shopping...

You beat me to it. I would also say the benchmade 210 Activator, 705, 707 and Benchmite. For Spyderco I would go with the Polywog, Cali. Jr., Native, Ronin and the DoDo. I also like the Bladetech Mouse, which was a Spyderco design. You should also look at either a Strider PT, or a Small Sebenza for the high end market.

Don't have a knife recommendation, but I'm glad to see you're out of "hot water".

How about a small multi-tool? Seems that the other tools might come in handy, since few college students have toolboxes handy.

Best Wishes,
Bob

I am not out of hot water, but I am looking to prove that I am making a good-faith effort to comply with university policy regarding pocket knives... and of course, even given the trouble I may or may not be in, looking for an excuse to buy another knife, but then, all of you know THAT feeling well... :D

The way I see it, since I have done nothing but cooperate with security, and am making efforts now to replace my older collection with a more obviously university-approved collection (I do admit I have this thing for small knives, anyway), I hope to help prove my good intentions and willingness to go to lengths to meet the rules as they have been interpreted for me.

ON THE OTHER HAND... You guys have recommended EVERY KNIFE ON MY LIST. AND THEN SOME. Gah, I guess I'll just have to go out and... buy them all? 0.0

I saw someplace that the Mini-Manix has a 3" blade... guess I must have been wrong? I could have sworn I saw that on Newgraham, though... *scratches head* huh...

EDIT: And if you guys could stop telling me about the Caly Jr. in ZDP189, I'd appreciate that. >.< You all KNOW that it isn't in stock anywhere, so you can stop rubbing it in now, lol.

EDIT: And yes, I have a Leatherman multi-tool on the way, but I actually do have a toolbox handy, so just the knife is nice to have in my pocket- the Leatherman goes in my backpack.

Duh on my part!! How could I forget to mention the Strider PT?? Great little knife; tough as nails, and very sheeple friendly!!!

I have one of the Bm's you mentioned that was left behind in the thread, a 707.

I really like it, slim profile, grippy in the hand, and a good sized blade resides inside.

Overall, a great little EDC knife, imho, it is probably more then the spydies that people are suggesting you take to buy, but is worth every dollar.

Good luck with whatever you pick up, may it serve you well.

Why does everyone rave about the Falkniven U2? You cannot open it one handed. Doesn't it have a thumb nick?

It doesn't. But it's a very well-built folder, light and small, with excellent edge geometry and a reliable lock. The steel is in my experience as good as ZDP-189, it seems to hold an edge forever.

And the knife is small enough not so scare the sheeple.

Anybody verify the length of the cutting surface on the Mini Manix? I saw 2.75" and I saw 3.25".

Oh yeah... anyone seen a Delica for sale with VG10 or ATS55? I know they exist... :shifty:

The BM 707 is a heck of a lotta knife in a small package, *much* better than the 705 it replaced IMHO (and I *liked* the 705!).

Gotta second Esav's recommendation of the Cricket. It's about the most useful, yet totally inoffensive to sheeple, knives out there. That reverse "S" blade gives it a fine point for detail work, and a hook like the Dodo that carves through cardboard, clam-packs and zip-ties better than knives several times it's size.

As for the Poliwog, I found the handle very ergonomic, but the size, shape and position of the blade was far less than ideal. I sold off a Salsa for the same reason: too damn stubby to cut well in daily use.

I'm surprised no one has recommended a Swiss Army Knife. They're about as innocuous as you can get, and the 84mm models' blades measure a tad under 3", if memory serves.

That's what I was raising my eyebrow at for the Poliwog... it looks really cool, but the way the handle is couldn't have been good considering the stubby blade. I have a Leatherman, but my only real thing against Swiss Army Knives is that I chew my nails pretty badly and I generally can't open them.

I would like a blade as close to 3" as possible, and frankly I simply hate the way the Dodo looks.

Spyderco Salsa or Titanium Salsa are both nice knives.

You could always break the tip off a Paramilitary. ;)

Working at a college campus, eh? Lots of girls....might want to get a knife that doubles as a conversation piece! He he!
Go to the Spyderco site, and pick one with a nice, bright colour!

LMAO, thank you, that just made my day. The female to male ratio at Winona State University is 64-36. :D It's because the two biggest majors are still elementary education and nursing. Anyone want to visit? :p I don't usually comment on such things, but they tend to be attractive and between the ages of 17 and 22. I can offer tours, and would accept payment in cutlery form... ^_^ wow... lmao...

I was really wanting a paramillie, manix, or custom Buck 110, but that damn blade length restriction... plus I don't think I could force myself to willingly damage a knife. I might get the Mini-Manix, though. I have to wait until Friday, in any case.

So far it's looking like Mini-Manix, Caly Jr. ZDP189, MiniGrip RSK, 705, 210, or 707, for school use, but another thread has really turned me on to the idea of a custom 110 for when I'm not in school... such a classic. Probably one of the first three.
