Im looking for a 3 inch or under Fixed/folder. It must be a tough knife that can be easily accessed with one hand, I'll be cutting wires, tape, drywall, prying ect. I just need a real beater that can get the job done any suggestions?

when you say 3 inches or under do you mean the blade or the whole knife?

if its just the blade, i'd recommend the benchmade 556 mini grip or a SAK of some sort

While the mini grip is a good choice I do not agree on the SAK.

Seems as though the OP will be putting some hard use to the knife. In that case you want something with a good usable steel and a lock.

While SAK's have their many many uses a construction site is not one.

I'd vote for spyderco manix 2, delica, native

Take a look at Ragnar's site, Ragweed Forge. He carries several short bladed pukko style knives. Frost's Mora 2/0 is one such.

I make this suggestion because of the extreme use you will be putting the knife to. It makes no sense to buy an expensive knife for such use. Any knife is going to get torn up in short order, but fixed blades will be more durable than folders. The Moras have excellent steel which is what really counts, and at c. $10 each, you can have several spares in your tool box. For what you are doing, spares are important since it is way easier to pull a sharp spare out than to stop and resharpen a dull knife,

Either the Cold Steel Mini AK-47 or Cold Steel Mini Lawman, provided the sheeple at work aren't afraid of black blades.

ooh i see. a good multitool with a lock would be the leatherman surge or charge then...i can only imagine that on a construction site it would be more useful than just a folder...just my two cents.

I agree fully. A Leatherman Charge, Wave, or even Core (not one handed) is what it sounds like you need. Get a Multitool and then decide if you still need a dedicated blade. If you still want a tough blade after that then looking into an Izula.

Emerson CQC 14 is 2.7" blade with a full size handle.

Or the ESEE Izula.
That is a very nice knife but I dont think im willing to pay that much for a work blade :(

Sorry I meant the blade for legal reasons

thanks for the suggestions guys! so far I'm liking the mini griptillian and Spyderco native they booth look pretty solid and the clip is a plus  but I was really hoping for some more fixed blades :p

+1 on the Cold Steel Mini-Lawman and/or Mini-AK47. Very tough knives with a great reputation.

I have also been using the Benchmade Mini-Bone Collector for the past month, and it's been great. Even better after I got the edge up to snuff on the EdgePro.

I would rate it as indestructable as the Cold Steel minis mentioned above.

I think I might get the Ak-47 if nothing else I like the tip on it and the price tag isnt to bad at all :D a Leatherman isn't really a option I have all the other tools I require and sometimes i'll be on rooftops where I might not be able to use booth hands.

Esee Izula would beat almost any folder in tough task. Combine that for special front pocket Kydex sheath you can get from Esee sub forums you have one heck of an tool, backed by great warranty. Get paracordwrap or get micarta handles. Its a great little fixed blade. You break it, Esee will send new one. No Questions asked warranty for their fixed blades.

might i suggest a HEST?

not sure if the blade is a hair over 3 inches but it seems like it would fit the bill perfectly.

if the blade is a little over you could grind it a little?

You need to check out the Izula. It's one of the few sub 3 inch fixed blade that can be used as a beater with no problem. It's light, strong, and relatively cheap. Becker necker also comes to mind. As much as I love the Native its FRN handles dont have steel liners so there is a tiny bit of flex and may not be ideal for really hard use. I would stick with small fixed neck knives since you end up spending alot more for a small folder that is hard use capable.

I would not be too concerned about a native withstanding hard use. It is a very solid yet lightweight knife. You could also try out some of the Byrd knives. I use one commercial fishing. I find the handle of the Mini-Grip too small to use comfortably for difficult cutting chores and I have small hands.

I agree:
1- Much more functional overall than any single bladed knife
2- Won't draw unwanted attention from coworkers
3- Available in a variety of styles to fit a lot of needs.

A STANLEY 99E. The *sheepsfoot* blade is an advantage in those types of applications, and if you damage the blade, it can be replaced.
