Sub 3 Inch Knife for work

Cold Steel Pendleton Mini Hunter is a good candidate, especially for around $30. I agree, spending too much money on a work knife is probably not a good idea. Try the cheap ones first. Fancy tools have a strange habit of walking away from work places.

I'd say get yourself an ESEE Izula if you don't mind carrying a fixed blade which it sounds like you don't. If people start giving you wierd looks with it clipped on your belt you can slide it into your front pocket. You can also order a sheet of leather and make a smaller more comfortable pocket sheath.

As far as a tough folder goes thats in your price range it sounds like the Cold Steel Mini American Lawman might be a good choice. I haven't tried one myself but they sure have some positive reviews lately with the introduction of the triad lock. They use AUS 8 steel which is a tough steel that would be able to withstand the abuse you might be putting it through. You will however have to sharpen more often then some of the current higher end steels.

I think I might get the Ak-47 if nothing else I like the tip on it and the price tag isnt to bad at all :D a Leatherman isn't really a option I have all the other tools I require and sometimes i'll be on rooftops where I might not be able to use booth hands.

actually there are a couple one-handed leathermans:

Provided you have the money for them, theyre all a bit pricey
Otherwise the mini-grip is my choice for a folder. Even better, check out the Doug Ritter mini griptilian its a lot better for utility purposes...sturdier blade with good steel plus you get the axis lock
Either way you cant really go wrong :D

If you are going to be cutting wire I would use a multi tool. Yes a knife can do the job, but why? Use a tool intended for the job. Plus they have screwdrivers and other useful features plus a knife blade when needed.

I agree fully. A Leatherman Charge, Wave, or even Core (not one handed) is what it sounds like you need. Get a Multitool and then decide if you still need a dedicated blade. If you still want a tough blade after that then looking into an Izula.

Multi-tools have no place on a construction site. As a construction worker, OP will have access to pliers, screwdrivers etc. If you need a tool, just use the real deal, that goes for knives too.

You guys should learn to read and give recommendations based on what the OP asked for and what he wants. Now that a SAK and Izula have been recommended, I'm just waiting for the Spyderco Military to come up.

I would recommend Cold Steel Mini-Lawman

Please try again...

For cheap, try BK-11 or a Brusletto Profileringsknive from Ragnars Forge. For a folder, the Kershaw Shallot has plenty of beef, and isn't bad spendy (ETA, I think Shallot has too large a blade. You might try a Leek). For a multi tool, so far I like the Leatherman Wave and 300, or if you don't carry a dedicated knife, the Sog Auto Lock, which has two assisted open blades and an easy one hand open plier. The Multis are the more expensive option, but they will do a LOT more than a knife alone. For the best option, use both.

You could also try a Superknife, which is pretty cheap, and a good little tool, or an Olfa Silver, which is sweet and sharp, though not hard use in the least.

For cutting wire and drywall, prying, and similar "not really knife" tasks, I suggest a cheap POS from the local $1 shop. Throw it away if you break it. No edge will last with that treatment and a sharp edge on a pry knife is just asking to be cut.

Sounds like any knife will get destroyed really fast with those tasks! I'd reccommend a small leather box type belt pouch with a fixed blade stanley knife (the kind with replacable razors) - you can find these online at any flooring tools supply place like toolsforfloors.com General hardware stores usually don't carry those two. As for prying, a heavy duty putty knife, and for cutting wire, wire cutters, all of which will fit in said pouch. IMHO, these will last far longer than any knife and you won't have to sharpen any blades. Don't get me wrong, I love my knives, but I do that kind of work fairly often and I see the toll it takes on those tools too. Every hardware store also sells folding stanley razor knifes too, that is if you're dead set on a folder.
