Purchasing a christmas gift for my nephew, and decided that he's old enough to start carrying a good blade(He'll be 15 in January). (No age limit here in Texas so legality isn't an issue) Looking for:

Plain Edge
Manual Opening
Tip Up Clip preferably
Lightweight (sub 4 oz)
Non metal handles, preferably g10 or zytel
Possibly FFG
Under $40

Any Ideas? Its looking to be a tenacious right now.

Kershaw Skyline Kershaw Leek. Most Kershaw honestly. Spyderco Tenacious, Persistance. RAT 1 folder. Spyderco Byrds. For 50$ roughly, you can have a Benchmade Aphid.

All good suggestions so far. Consider also the various Kershaws, like the Asset - a well constructed assisted opener (though I see now that you asked for manual) that goes for $21 or so online. Tip up or tip down carry. Feels like a more spendy knife.

Young Timmy will say, "Thanks, Uncle Socks. You're the greatest!"

What has been said so far, I totally agree with them.

You also might check out the CRKT Drifter (G-10 version from the sound of it), Boker Trance, Buck Vantage Avid or Kershaw Zing.

Good luck.

COLD STEEL XL ESPADA!

Just kidding.
CRKT makes quite a few knives that offer good value for the money. Some are over the $40 mark, but can be found from friendly dealers, ebay, and so on, for less than MSRP. Overall, good knives, solid company, but not so expensive that you'll blow a ring seal if he doesn't take perfect care of it.

But you don't have to listen to me. I'm a bit hung up on "crickets".

The other route is to get something so damn hard that he'll have to try to break it. But that's your call, and your money.

There are a few major online sites that have spyderco delica and endura 4 FFGs for $45. Under $40, there are kabar doziers and most manual kershaw knives. Also, the Buck vantage select and avid (large and small) are both nice knives for under $40, but they are only tip up carry. I carry a Buck vantage pro and like it very much.

I have a Smith & Wesson Special Tactical Folding Pocket Knife and really like it. I think it makes a really good beginner knife.

It was the SPyderco Native until (( deal spotting )) stopped carrying them some years ago. I guess I'd say the Spyderco Tenacious or one from that line. The older Benchmade Pikas are good for the money. The newer Pikas are excessively heavy but still not bad.

I know it's supposed to be a surprise but what about maybe taking him to a store and letting him pick it out? after all it's gotta feel good in his hand right? I've been given knives a few times that I hated so they end up in a drawer or the really cheap ones go in the garbage eventually.

- Kershaw Skyline (tip-up carry does expose a fair amount of the knife above the pocket though, so I prefer to carry mine tip down)
- Spyderco Delica FFG (you can sometimes find these for $40 or less - shop around)
- Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter (regular or mini version)
- Victorinox/Wenger SAK
- CRKT M21-02G
- Sanrenmu SRM-763

These are a bit larger. If your nephew is pretty big, these may be a good fit.
- Ontario RAT-1
- Spyderco Endura FFG (you can sometimes find these for $40 or less - shop around)
- CRKT M21-04G
- Enlan EL-02B
