My vote goes to the Spyderco Tenacious. It feels good in the hand and has a great blade shape that allows it to do so many differenrt tasks. It takes a good edge, holds it pretty good and is easy to sharpen. Hands down it is the knife I reach for the most when I need a knife that I can count on. I think it is one of the best models Spyderco has ever made.
One that hasn't been mentioned. Boker Action 2. Tip up carry, really nice ergos. Pohl design. Overall, though, Tenacious, Rat 1, KaBar Dozier, and about a half dozen Kershaws come to mind. It's amazing how many really good knives can be had for $40 or less.
I guess you already got the best options suggested here.
My vote goes for the Rat-1 (on the larger side), the Ka-bar Dozier folder (slightly smaller), or the Buck.
Gave one of those to my younger son with an orange handle a year ago. It's been a decent knife for him, and the orange lets me see what he's up to from across the campsite.
Just gave my older son a Buck 500 lockback for his birthday, no clip but comes with a sweet leather sheath.
Buck Vantage Select, Kershaw Skyline, Rat-1, they're all good choices. I find the Rat-1 more comfortable (flatter) for pocket carry compared to the bulkier Large Buck Vantage. The small Vantage is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, it seems sturdier than the Skyline and it's a bit more "sheeple" friendly.
Like a bunch of people have already said, you can't go wrong with the RAT 1! Awesome knife! One of my favorites.
Also like has been previously stated, there are tons of options from Kershaw! The Zing looks really nice, just don't like the clip design. Good price for a USA made knife!
kershaw zing is probably my favorite knife in that range. although, insure tenacious and dragonfly would be awesome choices too, i just don't own those
my absolute vote would be Kershaw Skyline, and Cold Steel Voyager with Clip point blade. Choose from all models mentioned in this thread. Much depends on how he is using it as tool and personal preference.
Another vote for the most comfortable knife I've ever handled... Boker Trance. I wish they made it in a fixed blade but anyway, it's light, great frame lock, great blade size and shape, and is among the top bang-for-buck knives.
