Sub-$50 Folder for Friend-- Recommendations?

EDC'd them for roughly 8 years with no major failures noted...

But, have been EDC'ing either the Kershaw model Leek or Vapor, or the Camillus Cuda EDC, for the last year with very positive results to date...

(Ok, so I'm a sucker for framelocks...lol)

I think the Vapor is the best 'bang for the buck' out there these days, for around $25 at 'Wallyworld' IIRC...

For the price range, I don't think that your friend would be disappointed with any of these Spydies(in my order of preference);

 Gray Calypso Jr.(limited edition, get 'em while you can!)
Delica
Native
Endura

the Delica is great but probably less burly than the S&W your friend likes. The Native is burlier than the Delica, but here's a good altenative, the CRKT M18 which has gotten positive reviews from forumites:

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/...gid=&mscssid=36B3R74C2VCK8G086UQQVW23LEQ00KKB

flipper opening, aluminum handles w/G10 inserts, AUS8 blade steel is ok, recurve blade 3.25" long & 0.12" thick at 57-58 HRC, Closed length: 4.38" Weight: 3.5 oz, pocket clip, steel liner lock with extra LAWKS safety lock, and unlike FRN Spydies it is held together with Torx screws so you can take it apart to clean it. All for $43 plus shipping. Good deal!

Another option he might go for (as long as I'm browsing Cheaper Than Dirt, thanks to the link above) Is the Kershaw Blur: 3-3/8" blade of 440A (not so great), Anodized aluminum handle w/Trac-Tec inserts, 4.2 oz, and the super-fun spring-assisted Speed-safe opening mechanism. $46

AND, although it's just a bit small at 2.9", everyone who's had one agrees that the benchmade mini-griptillian is a great little knife, super-smooth and ergonomic, with the AXIS lock, and here they have them at the incredible price of $46!!!!! (but it's combo-edge, which may be a deal-killer)

You can't go wrong with any Spyderco but for the Money the knife I carry most is the CRKT M1 and it has really won me over. Good price under $40 and built like a tank with one real good blade shape and edge.

Runsalone, if you still have the Odyssey you can email Joe Houser at Buck and ask what a new blade would cost. Tell him what you did, they are very reasonable folks and will fix you right up.

Hey guy. Man after I broke the tip I reformed it and pretty much made it my personal mission in life to see just how much that thing would take. This finally resulted in the ultimate demise of the knife. To be honest, I stuck it in between two 2x4s in a final effort to either break the knife or pry the 2x4s apart. The 2xs won.

I will probably own another hopefully in ats-34(? i think thats right) I just wanted to try somthing different with the m-16. I can honestly recommend the buck to anyone. The things I did with that thing would make any lover of sharp pointy things pee thier pants, but it always survived, always took a scary sharp edge back, and never let me down.

I do things like this for a reason-I like to know the limits of my equpment .The oddesy was nothing short of fantastic(and no I dont work for buck:p ) And if I ever own another one ill know exactly what its strengths are!

To be honest ive owned a few buck knives in my reletively short life, and I dont remember ever having a problem with any of them! Ive never called warranty:)
