Sub $50 Spring Assist

You can also find certain Leek models with a frame lock. As mentioned, the blade isn't meant for prying (are any of them really?) and is a good slicer. Lifetime warranty.

Also check put kershawguy's blem sales thread. Excellent bargains!

I vote for the S&W. The leek's blade bends very easily IMO. And also the SOG Flash 1 is good, but don't buy anything from those unimaginative buffoons.

My comment above about not using a knife blade as a pry bar has been confirmed. :)

I had a S&W once, when I got it the tip was broke off, the blade was scratched up, and it felt and looked like it handed been cleaned it years. So I cleaned it, lubed it, sharpened it, and gifted it. I didn't like the feel of the knife, I'm pretty sure it had plastic handles, and a thin liner lock. I talked to the guy I got it from and he said he paid around $60 bucks for it.

I like the Leek, more of a gentleman's knife. It is not made for destruction videos are very hard use (although some have) :)
Carrying one of my Damascus versions today. An excellent slicer. ;)

I've added a "few" since I took these photos, so they're not up to date.

This pic came out really dark. If you can't see well enough, on the right are SS and VIB Leeks
On the left is a Black Pearl and some CB's

The Leek is a great design, as are many other Kershaw Speedsafe models.

It may not be designed for hard use, but it will actually hold up to a lot. I'd guess that the leek is one of the most abused folder designs in the country. A friend of mine used his hard (in construction) for years. He dropped in a gravel parking lot and it was buried in snow and driven over countless times. When spring rolled around he recovered it. A quick dis-assembly to clean it, and a sharpening was all that was required to bring it back to shape.

So many frankenleek combos are running through my head right now just looking at those pics Mike, like Damascus blade + G10 handle (or the one with CF over lay)

I think one or two folks have mentioned the Needs Work as a good choice. The G-10 version is an excellent work knife. Very snappy opening, good blade steel, G-10 handles over full stainless steel locking liners. I didn't like the looks at first, but after using it, I love it.

You've also gotten many other good recommendations with the Leeks, Blurs, Scallions, etc. A factory 2nd/blem from kershawguy will save you even more money, too.

I have a smith and wesson m&p MAGIC assisted knife and a couple of Kershaws. I like the S&W, but it's not very good quality. The steel is cheap and the handle loosens up alot. I have to remove the rubber insert and tighten up the frame. If you're going to spend the money get a Kershaw. I think the S&W knife is cool and I love the spring assist on it, but it is much lesser quality. For a few bucks more, do what everyone says, get the Kershaw.

I just picked up a kershaw avalanche brand new from a reputable Internet knife store for 45 bucks! S30v steel, grippy g10, assisted opening... It's a steal!

Hi fhetw -

I vote for the Leek as well - and if you want to save a little, go to the exchange and check out kershawguy's blems -

I got one for a beater ($29 delivered) and it is outstanding - one of my favorites. Here is a pic of the one I picked up - you can see the small blem on the spine by the thumb stud (big deal lol )

I picked up one of the ZDP Composite Blurs Blems. The only thing I could see wrong with it was that the copper used in the wield bled a little bit, but it's mostly hidden under the handle so it's a bit hard to see. As for the knife its self, well, it's hard to beat a Blur for EDC.

+1 to any Kershaw! Just got me a Speed Bump for $35 on eBay. :) That makes 21 Kershaw's for me.

The leek is great but why not save up 20 more bucks and get yourself an auto kershaw (7000 Kershaw is now on sale!)

Oh and becareful of opening that kershaw, you use the little hump on the back and not the side holes ususally. For a newbie at it, you might split your thumb open like I did (the first thing I did with in 10 seconds of owning the knife...). Read the directions!!!
