Anyone ever see a sword made in a sub hilt style? Just curious and if anyone has any input as to why this would not work. Thanks!

There isn't any reason why it wouldn't work. The grip on a rapier is three fingers behind the cross guard and the index finger over and in front of the cross guard.

make that two in front two behind on the bottom side with the top quillion socketed in the pocket between thumb and index finger, middle finger secures the sword in the hand so that the weapon can be held in a relaxed grip without loss of control, yet strong in opposition

It just sort of came to me when I was watching Kyle Royer's sub hilt videos and thought it might look good. Did some sketches and I think it might just work. And don't worry, if it works out, pics will definitely be posted :D

I would extend the subhilt 1/2 - 3/4 inches above the handle in sort of a proto-quillion so that there is something to index the top of the hand into

I'm thinking something like this. Full takedown with bronze hardware and some copper spacers.

You have the profile, just transfer it over to the barstock and GET STARTED! I would like the blade straighter with that slight little upturn at the tip, or even just a dead straight blade.

Yup, just transfer it and go, that's how they always start :D I'm going to have to figure out the butt cap a little once I get the stock on the lathe, the one in the drawing was just a place holder. Too....well, too something, just have to start shaping to see what I can do on that. I like the idea of of a dead straight blade, have to work on that one

try mocking up a hilt and experiment with the subhilt and see where it dances in your hand

You could just make it a through tang? Slot eveything like you would with the guard. Or you could cut out the profile and fit on bolsters.

Hmmm....interesting thought. I'd worry a little about the weight but I might be able to balance it out a little better, too. Looks like tomorrow is mock up day! :D

Taper the tang if you are going to do bolsters over the profile, if through tang then it should balance just fine.
