Subaru?

in japan the do a forester sti edition thats actually faster than the impreza wrx sti.
my friend had a modified impreza in the u.k and i have been over 160mph in it. it was a beautiful car before it skidded on ice........

My brother is a mechanical engineer who is so careful about every purchase that it's annoying. He researched buying a new car for almost a year.

He ended up getting a Subaru.

Mom has a Forester and my Father sold Subaru's for a while, so here's my .02.

Nice cars, can't dissagre with anything anyone's said about em. For the money just buy one new. It's about the same money.

97 Outback, 4 cylinder, a little underpowered, but an excellent car. From what we've seen and test driven they've really improved an already good car in the last few years. Mileage, for a 4, is disappointing--maybe 20-25 MPG--but you have to love the all wheel drive when it rains or snows.

When I was looking at new cars a while back I also checked out the Mazdas--see Hugh's reccos above. Take a look, if only for comparison, it'll be worth it!

fwiw i had a subaru legacy back in the late 80's and it was pretty much bulletproof. no problems of any kind. later, ahgar

Lots of Subaru praise in this thread.

I'll add my bit.

I have a 02 WRX wagon, easily the best all-around car I've had. I can afford a better car but this car has all I need and want.

We're a family of Subaru owners & lovers Subaru. My only objection is the slight cabin space tightness. So now I own the first Non-Subaru in the family, a Mazda 626, also been an excellent ( spacious) car but it's not a Subaru.

OK, my bit, we considred a subaru a few years ago. But at that time the car weren't built to accomodate anyone over (or near) 6 ft tall.

They still aren't. That's my biggest beef with it. Really, folks, telescopic steering wheels don't cost much to install. Even Ford Focus and VW Golf have them.

If not for that, I would have bought a Forester long time ago.

Of course, now, with the price of gas, I would have second thoughts considering rather poor fuel efficiency of Subies. Perhaps if they bring their diesels next year (if they do - and a telescopic steering wheel), that would change the picture.

Actually that's my biggest surprise with the Honda Pilot. Its a pretty big vehicle, but I have to put the seat all the way back and I'm only six feet tall. My Ford Ranger, on the other hand, I can't even fully depress the clutch if I put the seat all the way back.

As a funny thread jack, I heard on Car Talk once that the new VW Beetle was a great car for a big fat guy, because the seats were high and the doors swung almost perpendicular to open. At 6', 315, I qualify, but I can't imagine driving a Beetle!

Finally an advantage to being 5'7" :D

Shootist, one of the advantages of the Forester over the other Subarus is that it is a taller model. The car has a taller cabin and sits its passengers taller than the other Subs. In this, it is like the newer compacts like the Focus, the Mazda3, and the Chrysler PT Cruiser.

I'm 6' and fit fine (even have extra leg room) in my '05 Legacy GT sedan. However, I'm thin (~150lbs). I've got 12k miles on it and love everything but the fuel economy. If you don't need serious speed, I'd get the non-turbo; it'll yield ~6 mph more.

I just bought an '04 Forester and love it. I inflated the tires to about 34 psi and get 26-28 mpg. Not bad at all. I can't say enough good things about this car.

So shootist16 ,

Have you taken a Forester for a test drive yet? If so, was it an XT model. :D

Haven't done it yet. If so it will be the XT model. My wife isn't crazy about the looks. She thinks she wants to look at the Vovlo V-50.

Just tell her it looks great from the drivers seat. The view of the scoop is beautiful. Especially accompanied by the serenade of the turbo whine. :D

Good luck. You'll have a blast with it if you pick up the XT. It's a lot of power, cool engineering, safety and utility for the money.

The only downside for some people is the gas mileage when your on throttle and the requirement of high octane fuel.

Probably not a concern but modding it is easy since the engine is basically a detuned 2.5 WRX STi motor with a smaller turbo for less lag and different exhaust. The chassis is an Impreza chassis too so your not limited there. The potential is great.

Please post a report after you take one for a test drive if you don't mind. I'm curious to hear what you think about it. I've heard that the '06 XT's are a little slower then the '04/05's but gas mileage has improved . Subaru changed the gearing slightly but it should still be a little beast.

Talked my wife into test driving the Forester. She, and I, thought it was a fun car to drive. The XT seemed very agile. But... she also test drove the Tribeca and wants one of them. I never would have test drove one on my own, but the Tribeca was pretty nice.

See if you can get her to wait for the XT model to be released. A turbocharged, intercooled flat-6 would be a blast. :D

I checked one out in the showroom before. The interior was sweet. I really liked the flow of the layout.

How'd it handle? More like a car or a minivan/truck?

Did you look at the Outback XT or the Legacy wagon GT?

Either way, you can't got wrong with a Subaru.

Handled more like a car. I love the interior. Based on looks I would never have test drove one. We didn't look at the outback or legacy. Are they coming out with an XT model? We are trying to decide now whether to trade or wait. They are changing the grill on the 2007 Tribeca. Black instead of chrome.
