Hey folks , I have one of my favorite folders that the detent ball went AWOL , I saw some in a supply catalog but I'm darned if I want to pay $15 for one ball.

So my question is what do , or would any of you use as a substitute ?

And , any hints on reinstalling the ball once I can acquire one ? I'm assuming you have to press or peen it into place.

Thanks in advance. :D

Hi, Jantz sells them for $2 each, Texas Knife has them for $0.20 each or $2.00/100. Of course, you'll still have to ship them. Might just be able to get one from someone around here. You'll have to press the ball in.

im on the look out for a slighty bigger then STD. size ball (i may ahve over drilled the detent on the blade:o)

you know what size you need im sure i have 2 sizes in my folder parts box and im sure i could get one to you

i have quite a collection of small ball bearings so if you dont find one elsewhere, i might have one. i just need to know the size.

and another offer, if you know the size, it would help limit the number to send.
I have 1/16", 2.0mm, and 3/32"....all in hardened 440C Stainless Steel. I almost never use one as large as 3/32".
If you will email me your address , I'll send you a couple or so of either the size you know you need or a couple of each of those 3 sizes. The most "expensive part" of the shipment will be the 41 cent stamp.....
I have a spare one of those also (smile).

Or if you'd rather buy a few, these folks have been a supplier I have enjoyed doing business with ocassionally over the years...

Thanks a ton for the replies folks and the offers !! :D This is what makes BF such a pleasure.
As to the size , I honestly do not know.
The knife is a CRKT S-2 , the smaller version.. I would like to assume 1/16 but since it was built overseas it may be metric , but then would not there most likely be a standard size used for these ? Even if in metric.

I must have misread the price in Texas catalog because I swore it said $15 a piece for them , and my gullible self thought " well maybe theyre made of special , hardened steel or something ". :D

i know i'm a little late but check out mcmastercarr.
its mcmaster.com

they carry a few dozen sizes and they have 440C and 52100. i think i'm going to order a few of the 5/64 for those oops i overdrilled the detent hol screw ups you encounter now and then:confused:

that makes me feel a little better about over drilling hahhaha

yeah it happens... i thought i had it right. but noe wrong drill... and i've definately learned no matter what its labeled never trust it... always bring out the calipers and check em out. measure each one every time you use it.
now i need some bigger detent balls

I agree with Butch, I'll bet at one time or another we have all drilled the detent hole a bit large, or slightly out of precise location....I always start with a #53 drill and 1/16" (0.0625") ball.
Then if "tweek needed, go to the 2.0mm (0.08ish") ??That is why i have a few 2.0mm....:D

you the man richard! thanks for the phone call. make sure you post pictures of those engines your buddy made when you get a chance:thumbup:

sizes of balls i have in limited quantity. 1- @.47 1- @.59 1- @ .60 i have a few @ .91 a few 1/8" and a few @ .95 a good source of ball bearings are old computer parts like hard drives which have small bearings, some cpu fan motors too.

Thanks John , after re-checking the catalog , I totally misread the print , didnt get the 'item 100' part.

Richard , you know what ? I have old HD and cup fans all darn day @! I didnt think of ball bearings in those , the other night I was looking around my apartment for ideas on a substitute to use and those didnt occur to me.
I work on computers for a living and have more spare parts than CompUSA's garbage bin , I'm going to look now and see what I can dig up.

You guys rock !

some folders have detnt balls to keep the blade in position when closed. you can do a search for more information if you like.
