Suburbopolan Truck Walk Home Kit

Retire the Battle Rat!?
It hasn't even been broken in yet. :p

I agree with that being a lot of stuff to haul. I'd lose one of the radios, most of the extra batteries and probably the hatchet as you probably won't be building a leanto on Statten Island. There will be plenty of shelter around in the form of abandon vehicles and buildings.

The goal is getting back to Mrs.Q and lil` Qjr ASAP. Right?

That is the only goal. I'm gonna start stripping stuff out and I'll post the revised list when I get to it. My goal is gonna be 25 pounds gross: max.

What pack are you using? Most important!

I am using a QrapPack™ which has been a concern. I think I picked it up at CTD.com. I need to get better pack for sure...not a monster...but a small to medium sized pack. Recommendations?

Get a dark colored nondescript pack that fits you and is comfy. Avoid too big of a pack because if your like me you will want to fill the empty spaces with stuff. Avoid the military molle/pals packs. Think generic and subdued. Add a pack cover or black garbage bag if the fit is right but the color is wrong.

Get a good quality day pack. Throw some granola bars, water and a good multi tool.

Put the A1 on your belt. couple of candles. You don't need 5 Bics. The pancho is good. Radio and an LED flashlight. You don't need a Survival Manual, you should already know this stuff but get a good street map for alternate ways to get to where you need to be.

The para cord is good but I'd ditch the belts. I don't want anything lashed to the pack or my person that would say "look what I got, come steal it".

You need a water bottle. Hawk is OK but i'd cut it down to about 14" and stow it in the pack. I know you like it but I don't think I'd pack any of mine with me on foot. I'd rather have a good snubby .38 and a couple of speed loaders for SD. I don't believe in close quarter engagements.

I'd also keep the space blankets, put in a small notepad, Sharpie and a Fisher Space pen.

Add some good leather or calfskin work gloves and a couple of facemasks and a small FAK. Get a hat.

I would delete some of the extra items in your kit. Since you are in a urban suburban environment you probably would be sleeping in buildings and could use a lighter sleeping bag. One set of spare batteries, one spare candle, less para-cord, one lighter, one space blanket, replace the hand cleaners with a travel bottle of Purell, less duct tape, one flashlight. Dump the tools and get a good multi-tool. The radio is very important to listen to emergency broadcasts, but you only need one. How much fishing are you going to do between NYC and LI. Remember it is a densely populated area and you will be able to scrounge or trade for food. Carry some instant coffee packets, tea bags, cup-of -soup, instant oatmeal and a hex stove to warm things on. You don't need a field manual. Carry a couple of dust masks and a disposable haz-met suit. Get the carry weight down to 25-30 pounds.

Check out Tactical Tailor and Camelbak.... TT make a really cool daypack for under $100. It doesn't have a lot of molle on it, if you don't want to look like a grunt. I like the stuff for the military market as it tends to be over-built. The Camelbak Talon is also well-liked.

FYI, that Collins Gem Wiseman Survival Handbook can be had from Wal-Mart's online store for a tiny amount. It may be something like $8 including shipping.

All good stuff to keep in a vehicle, but unnecessary to lug on foot from NYC to Lawn Guy Land. You might want to seriously consider just throwing a small bike in there.

Just an inexperianced guess here :o But as you trim some excess , mayby add a little more to the first aid kit ?

A good sturdy walking stick will probably be a better self-defense tool than a big blade or hatchet. It'll be in your hands when you need it and is pretty discreet.

Here's a scooter for ya go, Q. 25lbs and up to 21MPH. Folds up small and fits in your trunk or in a corner of your office. Says it will carry up to 400 lbs, but I bet that would be quite a site!

Brand suggestions Dawgie?

I originally thought that 1200-1500ci would be ideal, but after looking at The North Face Recon pack, which is 1850ci (30 liters), it might do you a better job. But I don't think that I would go any larger.

Here the current back pack and waist pack...

And here's the first round of cuts. This is the stuff that didn't make the first cut...

I powered up the $15.00 Kiato hand crank radio and it gets better reception in the basement than the $100.00 Eton 100. And the Kiato is lighter, doesn't need batteries, has a built in flashlight, and a little hand that comes out and jerks you off. Advantage Kiato. The Eton gets canned.

I'd keep the boonie hat and the caribiner.

The boonie is very good for keeping the rain off ya dome, and the caribiner weighs nothing and might come in handy.

If it gets real chilly where you are, you might consider a fleece scarf and/or watch cap. Very lightweight and fold up small, but will make all the difference when its cold out.

Gloves too...

Your pack looks like an old H-frame. You can go nuts with good day-packs these days. I prefer ones with lots of extra pockets myself.

whaddaya gonna do with the Battle Rat BTW?

At 20 miles/day, I'd think you may need a few gallons of water each day, just to keep going.

Maybe a full camelback bladder or a sealed gallon jug to start you off on the right foot - transfer the water to the bladder when the time arrives.

I gotta pick up one of those radios, although I'm looking at it's features and i don't see where the hand comes out =)

Forgot to mention that the extra pair of Redwings get the boot -- so to speak -- also. I wear redwings so the extra pair will only go in the trunk when I'm leaving town and not wearing 'wings.
