Subway Bowie

Hey sal I appreciate the prompt responses from everyone, I was hoping a replacement could just be sent based on the molded nature of the handle but cs told me I have to send the full knife from Canada to Colorado so that cost plus dealing with the border shipping ( one of the reasons I bought from a Canadian vendor) issues has me likely making my own sheath now. Unfortunate situation but again I appreciate the teams quick responses at least.

I finally picked mine up. Nice! It is almost exactly the same size as my Minimalist D2 Bowie, except it trades on finger of handle for more blade.

I have a Subway Bowie. I have not used it a lot, since I view it as a rainy-day knife (LC200N), and it does not rain a lot in Florida in the winter.

The blade is excellent, although at an average BESS score of 266 grams out of the box, it did need sharpening. It cuts very well now. I like the Subway blade much better than the ARK blade, which has too much belly. BTW, the ARK was even duller out of the box - over BESS 400 grams - and harder to sharpen because of the large belly.

The handle is fair. I like the deep finger groove, because small knives can be difficult to hold onto. But the handle just is not very comfortable. I have two MKM Jesper Voxnaes Mikros, with and without scales, that have a smaller handle than the Subway, but the Mikros are more comfortable. The Subway handle is acceptable because I do not expect to put it to heavy use.

The sheath is terrible. It hangs so that the handle is pointed away from the hand that I draw the knife with. There is no room on the sheath for extra grommets to make it hang correctly. At least the knife does not fall out of the sheath like two Bark River neck knives I tried. But I got a good sheath from Eight2Ten, so the Subway is usable, and chicks dig the Eight2Ten sheath (although I am too old and attached to take advantage of that fact). The ARK sheath is much better than Spyderco's Subway sheath.

Thank you for this statement.

Are you able to determine how long and wide the tang is?

The handle is opaque.
The narrowest part of the handle is 0.43 inches wide, so the tang must be narrower at that part of the handle.
My stud finder thinks the tang is 2 inches long. I do not know how accurate that is, but the tang cannot be much over 2 inches because of the lanyard hole.

May we have pictures of you knife and sheath, please?

I am a pocket guy, not a neck guy, so I really like the sheath. I like the narrowness of the taco design. The square bottom won't poke a hole in the bottom of my pocket. So... so far, so good.

I also have a Voxnaes Mikro (sheep foot with scales) and the Kydex sheath (I didn't like having magnets in my pocket). The crowned edges of the Mikro make the handle very nice, and the feel of the Mikro and Subway are very similar. I think the Subway fills my (extra large) hand a tiny bit better.

Anybody work in a dental office? ... or anywhere else that they can shoot an X-Ray so we can see the tang? Well... the reality of it is that nobody is EVER going to "hard use" this knife to the point that the tang is going to matter. Hard abuse, maybe .... but hard use? NEVER.

I do wish it were "prettier" but we already went through that earlier in this thread.

LC200N + FRN + Boltaron ? This little knife is going to be around for a loooooong time.

I'm interested in how long and wide the tang is.
A friend clarified the issue with an x-ray. Thank you Emilio!
Unfortunately I can't manage to post a picture from my computer. :-(

...Okay...

Send the photo to someone who can post it...
Use words to describe the tang...
Measure it with a ruler and tell us...
Post it somewhere else and post a link to it...

I believe you need to be (at least) a Basic Member ($10 per year) to post images and send/receive private messages.
[somebody correct me if I am wrong]

OK, Jumping in from outside the conversation, but at this point I’ve got to see an x-ray of that freaking knife lol 😂 😂😂

This is a pity.
A basic member can still post pictures, just not direct from a file on their pc/phone.
Upload picture to a hosting site (imgur, freeimage, Flickr, Facebook etc) then copy the image URL. You can then paste that in to the box that will open open when you click on the little landscape picture icon in the text reply box, and select the 'chain' (link) icon.

I'm sorry, I'm old-fashioned and don't use a host.
