Here is a little More hook knife for carving spoons and bowls. I don't like using knives that I didn't make my self. I make my own chisels, knives, axes, and carving tools, but this hook knife has me a bit stumped on getting a consistent bevel. At least one that doesn't look like it was chewed in.
Just looking for ideas on grinding. Will be using O1 steel 3/32 thick, hot bending the hook around a 3/4" mandrel. With this thin of stock I dont put any bevel in befor heat treat.
Thanks
Mike

3/4" or slightly smaller sanding drum should be able to do the inside bevel. I would do it chisel ground on the inside only. Or take some 1x30 belts and split them down to 3/8" or 1/4" and grind on the slack portion.

Would it be easier to grind before bending, then HT?
Thin metal to many problems with thin metal carbon loss and distortion at only 3/32 or 1/16 thick.
Grind needs to be on the out side for proper carving, Like a chisel.
I just thought there must be some one here who has made on of these befor.

Mike,

I make farrier knives and I do all my grinding then bending and wrapping the hook before heat treat. Your not holding that at temp for hours in heat treat, I would not worry about carbon loss. With O1 I would put an anti scale compound on it.
