suggest a decent folder

I like the Kershaw Bump, but seeing your concerns I, too, have to recommend either the Spyderco Native or the Byrd Cara Cara (not the stainless or aluminum handles). The Byrd Cara Cara is inexpensive and dependable, with the G10 model getting my vote. These knives, while stainless, do need a bit more attention than 440A blades to avoid corrosion.

For outdoor use, I prefer fixed blades, but the little Native can do a remarkable amount of cutting for its size. Its point is sharp enough to remove splinters and I dulled its edge a bit after a few days of cutting. It wasn't as difficult to sharpen as I'd been led to believe. Six passes on each side made it blistering sharp again. I don't believe I've ever seen a blade as sharp as the Native's, and it holds it for a long time. I cut heavy plastic a lot and I often judge a knife by how well it does that. It's also the best letter opener I've ever had.

I like the plain blade. Wal*Mart has a special deal with Spyderco and they can sell them for $39.95. The black serrated must be bought elsewhere and it goes for about $50. Wal*Mart's the way to go.

Finally, another folder I really like is the CRKT M21-04. The Kershaw Bump (black, s30v) goes for about a hundred bucks on eBay. I like the recurved blade, though it may not appeal to some.
