I am getting my father a new pocket knife for the upcoming holiday. He wants small, nothing bigger than a 2" blade and it must have a lock of some sort, no slip joints. I know he would prefer plain edge as well.

What is the best knife that fits this? I was thinking Benchmite/Benchmite II off the top of my head. Or Sypdie Jester or Ladybug maybe?

So lets have it, what else is there?

My first thought was the benchmite, but then I thought that a Pro-Tech Runt makes a nice EDC.

I thought about a Pro-tech Runt too, or there are a couple of Daltons with blades that short as well, but I know he doesn't want an auto.

A friend of mine carries a Runt all the time though, awesome little knives.

I don't think anyone does little lockblades better than Spyderco. They feel and work bigger than their dimensions would suggest. Kopa is just over 2" IIRC but is a classy little gem of a knife. The Kiwi jigged bone is discontinued for 2006 but is still available. Clipless but also a gem and stainless scaled model is still available for a lot less. Cricket is smooth and tiny. Dragonfly stainless is often overlooked. It is just a couple of mm shorter than the Kopa. ATS-55 for the Dragonfly, VG-10 for the others.

Another vote for Spyderco. I would lean toward a stainless Dragonfly or Navigator. The Jester is cool for a really small knife.

The Al Mar Osprey is a nice little gents knife also take a look at the Blade Tech Mouse.

How about something more traditional, and something that doesn't have black plastic handles, since it's a gift...

The Gent's Lockback from AG Russell is barely over 2" - I doubt you father will notice an eigth-inch difference. :)

I'd buy my dad one of these: http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_..._g_russell_swing_guard_with_amboyna_wood.html
It's way over 2", but the beauty and smoothness of these knives are amazing. Bought one for myself, and the quality can best be described as "perfect".

Good Luck deciding,
-Bob

Leaning toward a stainless steel Jester or Benchmite.

I am pretty sure the Kopa and Dragonfly are bigger than he wants. Kiwi might be a possibility though.

I really like the Almar - Osprey too, but I almost gaurentee he will snap the tip off that thing. He's not exactly careful with his knives.

AG Russell Lock back is decent too.

Thanks guys, keep em coming.

I would go with Spyderco. The Dragonfly is often overlooked, as previously stated, but it is a good little knife.

Spyderco. Navigator or Meekat or Dragonfly (available in SS that can be engraved). I have all three and really like them.

those are all too big.

I am talking little pen knife. Jester and Ladybug are probalby the only spydercos that are an option

Cricket maybe

My coworker had a little, 2", plastic-handled, somewhat "locking" $4 crappy keychain knife that he bought at 7-11.
I though he might enjoy some actual quality and reliability but knew that he enjoyed the small size of it so I bought him a Spyderco Jester.
Nice little knife.
Very well designed, ergonomically, you can hold it a couple different, functional ways. The top of the blade is perfect for steadying with your index finger if you're looking for more precision cutting.
And, as he demonstrated last week, it does a good job on flesh as well (he sliced his palm open really nicely).
I told him that he had just learned both the "don't cut towards your hand" and "don't cut while you're upset" rules.
I vote for the Jester, sounds perfect for what you're looking for.

Buck 525-Gent or 526-Executive. Very slim, stainless handles that beg to be engraved with something, lockback. Blades are a hair under 2".

ya, my ex gf has the one with the light. Its a nice little knife

Thanks for all the help guys.

I couldn't decide between the Benchmite 2 and the SS Jester, so I ordered one of each. He can choose between those two and the AG Russell ultimate pen knife (which I have 5 of on the way for gifts, well 4 of them anyway ;) ) even though that one is a slip joint.

Or he can have one of each, whatever.
