Happy New Year!

Many forumites have contributed an enormous compendium of useful blade maintenance, recommended supplies, blade upgrading, sharpening, and other articles that we frequently refer to. I feel as though it would be advantageous to have a KHUKURI HELP or other "Sticky" below the IMPORTANT stickys that never fade down the page...

When one would click on the KHUKURI HELP heading, a list of topics covered could quickly help direct some of the "computer challenged" formunites like myself to the respective area desired. I think it can be done in a way that is extremely user friendly, and would save time in searches, and be invaluable for newcomers. I was lost when I first entered the website due to its sheer volume of posts, and am probably still very much lost, although I've found a home... :D

Just my opinion, but a possibility.

It's a fantastic idea, but the mind boggles at the effort to go through the posts (we're at 81,000+ right now, and I believe they've been archived at least once), looking for useful stuff, removing duplicates, cleaning up broken pictures, etc.

A less elegant solution of just providing links to the threads as they are, without distilling the content, would be easier, but still A LOT of work.

If Beo (who has VERY little time now, as I understand things) is willing to undertake this, I'd be glad to help.

Aardvark, you are a hero.

Maybe we could have other forumites do some of the rough work to identify posts in selected topics (e.g., handle repair; sharpening).

And John could finish that book. :)

Aardvark, if memory serves, there's 69,000 in the archive. So how long do you think it'll take you to go through 150,000 posts? :D

Hey, you guys, I hope you didn't miss the word 'help' in my original post. I have no intention of doing it alone. Your grandchildren would probably benefit from an effort like that, but no one before that.

I think Thomas has a good idea. As a group, it wouldn't take us long to search both the archive and current forum for selected topics. If this becomes a reality, we could have a sign-up thread where people could volunteer to search for particular topics such as sharpening, handle repairs, sheath repairs, applying patinas, etc so that we didn't end up duplicating our efforts. Then someone could gather all the links together and post them in a sticky thread.

Being that a lot of us do not have the time to dedicate, why could't the forumites so inclined make a little monetary contribution so a programmer could help out on an hourly basis to coordinate the organization of all this data. You could send, for example $10, and earmark it for WEBSITE. This website is already incredible; a bit of organization would help H.I. and all of us in the longrun. When you enter that "STICKY", a very user friendly guide can instruct the user how to make the most effective search while utilizing the search engines...

Maybe I'm weird...but I sort of enjoy hunting down the bits I'm interested in. I'm always surprised at what else I find that is interesting along my path...

Not at all wierd, Nasty. For myself, I KNOW there's stuff out there that I'm not even smart enough to look for. It's like having the best search enging in the world, and not knowing what question to ask it.

That way it will help newcombers with limited information, and allow the guys with a lot more knowledge use the search engines for specific topics they want to find out about?

Personaly I would like a search engine on the khukri faq.
But apart from that I wonder if all the posts were cataloged or indexed, if it would remove part of the freindly helpfull atmosphere one normaly finds on the forum?
Possibly it would remove a lot of the intereactions among folks?

Personally (opinions are like you know what and worth as much),the Cantina is what it is and I'd like to think that the HI folks are too busy getting great stuff for us to worry about building it into something else. It's not just the initial effort after all...once built, it has to be maintained!

I think Drdan has good ideas...Ddan...you ought to put up a new website for your new structure and mission. It'd certainly be easier than trying to reengineer this one... :D

I HAD the posts you were looking for!:( Could have easily listed them after going thru post by post current and archives.
NO MORE! See my post: Upgrade and Murphy's Law

But some of us here have to work! :p

For now, have stickied DDean's "Tip's" thread.

But there are dozens if not hundreds of threads like DDean's. And they shouldn't be allowed to perish.

I've been to other forums, and when a newcomber would ask a question analagous to "whats a kukuri?", he would instantly be flamed, and sent to the search engines... Many times the newbies would be afraid to ask the questions; not wanting to be assaulted. I must say, I haven't seen that once here, and I am amazed at the rapport, level of assistance and friendship.

There might be a totally different reason though for nobody fighting here... We're all highly armed individuals, who can go on the warpath in the bat of an eye! :D

That's basically what I wanted; we can take it to any level of help desired. Good move!
