Suggestion for Yangdu - A Well Intended Rant

Not in the case of my kbit.

I made the mistake of picking the knife and sheath up, as a unit, as I do many, many time each week with other knives. Apparently, I unconsciously grasped the sheath and not the knife.

My point is that if you pick up the knife by its handle, it doesn't matter if the scabbard drops off the knife, because you have the dangerous part of the knife and the scabbard (the knife itself) in your hand.

When I picked up a kukri off the floor this evening, I picked up the kukri and the scabbard horizontally and laid it down on the table next to me. Even if the scabbard was made for a kukri a half inch bigger all round, the scabbard wouldn't have dropped off.

Thus why I changed it slightly when I added it to the safety thread

'NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD A KNIFE BE PICKED UP BY THE SHEATH ALONE. THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS AND LEAD TO INJURY.'

I figure once you SAFELY pick it up the first time, it is your judgment alone to decide if it's safe to pick up by the sheath itself, by its handle, or a combination of both.

ps: As a general rule, knives are *not* safe and by handling them in any way you assume full responsibility for the results.

Nasty.

Both your change and your explanation are theoritically and practically acceptable and agreeable!

Thank you.

I love polite discourse!!!

I will say that Dans kydex sheaths are top of the line and are a compliment to anyones Hi K-bit!!

They cant get vegitanned?? bummer :(

Dan included instructions with mine on how to heat it up and re-conform it if necessary to fit my HI k-bit, but right out of the box it fit two of them perfectly. Great design.

Okay, so I said I was butting out and I'm back. So sue me.

Mike, please understand, I would never file a suit over something like this. I am merely trying to point out that I think Yangdu and HI have exposure that may be avoidable. Ridiculous suits are filed every day in this country and even winning them costs time and money. The McDonalds lawyers don't work for free.

I hope we can get a grip and take a deep breath here. I'm not attacking Yangdu or HI. I didn't think I was attacking anyone. I was talking about an unsafe sheath...and only one sheath, the Kerambit sheath, not all HI sheaths.

I see that you are raising a very interesting issue and that you mean well while doing so. I believe there is one thing that we all need to take into account: a good knife sheath can be quite costly. Generally speaking, for the price one spends to obtain a blade from HI the sheaths are reasonably well made. I own quite a few blades from HI and I can't say that I am happy with the quality of their sheaths but, I think they are a good deal for the total cost. I do think that there is room for improvement though, without increasing prices or affecting Yangdu's profit margin.
