Not in the case of my kbit.
I made the mistake of picking the knife and sheath up, as a unit, as I do many, many time each week with other knives. Apparently, I unconsciously grasped the sheath and not the knife.
My point is that if you pick up the knife by its handle, it doesn't matter if the scabbard drops off the knife, because you have the dangerous part of the knife and the scabbard (the knife itself) in your hand.
When I picked up a kukri off the floor this evening, I picked up the kukri and the scabbard horizontally and laid it down on the table next to me. Even if the scabbard was made for a kukri a half inch bigger all round, the scabbard wouldn't have dropped off.
