Suggestions for 8" fixed blade, large hilt

There's a couple of larger Blackjack knives available. the quick at 10", the warrior at under 8", and the Bowie, which I think is around 8.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A QUICK-DRAW SHEATH!!!!!!

I agree with the quick draw sheath suggestion.

The good thing about an 8" blade is that it's probably heavy enough to stay in the sheath without a retention snap.

I see the camillus bayonet is on your list...I recommend scratching it because it's a heavy POS.

Muela uses decent steel so don't let the low prices deter you. The cold Steel knife has a carbon blade but I don't think carbon steel is a problem if you takecare of it.

Have you considered the tried and tested Kabar? If you must have a rubber handle they make that but I've never held a knife that had a more positive grip than a leather handled Kabar or the other versions by Camillus and Ontario. My Kabar is over 18 years old and still kicking, wet climate and all!

If price isn't an issue, the Randall #1-7 is a formidable fighter!

Good luck,

Actually, I think that the best thing for what you described is a Lebel + section bayonet with a remade handle.

I just did a thread on the Ontario Spec Plus SP-93 and the SOG Fusion Jungle Primative. Both knives are Bowie Config and meet your Specs. Both knifes are around $50.00 or so. You can buy direct from the manufacturer or use eBay. I have had great success with the Ontario Spec+. Hope that helped!!! ~baba~

Purpose: animal defence while hiking and fishing in a rainforest wilderness area that has a very high population of mountain lions and bears.

My suggestion is that you familiarize yourself with the writings of Charles Darwin. Then purchase a .44 magnum.

I just picked up a Camillus leather-handled USMC Combat, and I couldn't agree more. As soon as I gripped it, I realized fully how this design has stood the test of time.

That's hilarious!:D

Can I also suggest paying particular attention to the part where Darwin describes "Natural Selection"?

Seriously, it looks like you have the right idea trying to cover all your bases. I'd like to suggest checking out a Marble's Trailmaker even though it's a couple of inches longer than your blade's target range of 8". That blade is 10" of convexed terror awaiting an oppurtunity to cleave something be it wood or soft tissue.   The Trailmaker has a large single quillion guard and a stacked leather handle with Aluminum butt cap. I've seen variations on handle material but that's what my TM has.

You already know what calibers work best for the furry, fanged things in your neck of the woods, so I won't go there.:D

Hi Neighbour, the Spyderco Temperance was designed for exactly that purpose but if it's a bigger blade you are after take a look at the Blackjack line esp the 'Blackjack Warner Big Country'.
I have the Grunt-superb knife !!!!

Pocketknife

Way too many options come to mind the way you have put it. One of the best options for your needs I think is this: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=429575

I suggest you contact the maker Daniel Koster and take it from there. Another option that comes to mind would be to obtain from the secondary market (they have been discontinued) a SWAMP RAT BATTLE RAT (SRBT). I have personal experience with these knives and with the Penetrator Tip they can go through any skin on this planet as if its not there. Add to this the absolutely fantastic Resiprene C handle and you know you have a winner:thumbup:! You should know that there have been produced two variations of the SRBR: one differentially heat treated and another more limited run, hardened through. Make no mistake that the hardened through is tougher than nails. I have three of the later type and they all are sharp like razors! Please, note that both of the options I offer have 9" (Koster's blade) and 9.5" (SRBR) blades but I believe they worth it! I also think that due to its blade profile the SWAMP RAT BATTLE RAT has a broader application spectrum i.e. it is a very efficient stabber as well as a fantastic cutter / chopper.

Aside from those options in my opinion one of the best knives for a variety of outdoors related tasks would be the BUSSE FSH! They are at a different cost level though:eek:! I have a FSH and a HH FSH both with magnum handles and Penetrator Tip and they are just awesome:thumbup: :)! Tremendous piercing ability and sharper than you can imagine. These have 8" blades. Also, the blade profile is very broad and thus suitable from cutting onions to using them as pig stickers.

I hope that helps.

I would get a nice solid walking stick with a thread on the and than get a solid knife with a threded hilt, and in dangeres areas just screw the knife on and use it as a spear. That will keep you from a distance of the predators.

Based on what you said about cougars up in that area, my recommendation would be to go buy a thompson 45 cal with a 100 round drum, convert it to full auto and take it with you. The minute you see even a hint of cougar, you open up on the forest, like a scene from predator, cutting the forest down. Then take a big bowie knife with you and when you see any predatory animal throw it at them and if it sticks and slams them into a tree say "stick around".

If you do this anough times, all the animals in the forest will run in a panic when they hear or smell you comming and you won't have any more problems.

as for blade recommendation, I recommend a bagwell hells bell by Ontario. It will penetrate both sides of a bullet proof vest to the hilt with nothing slowing it down.

Tomahak, 15 inch or larger Khukuri or big Bowie knife will work as well. Any heavy chopper will cause damage.

Seriously you don't want a knife for what you are talking about.

Look into a S&W 329 Scandium .44 mag

No it's not pleasant at all to shoot, but for your purposes it's VERY light to carry and packs enough punch for any of the above mentioned critters.

Why can some people not focus on the question asked?
He has stated that this it is a last ditch defense item, he does not want any guns, tanks or air to air missiles recommending, all of which would obviously be more effective !
I live in the same area and also carry a blade for the same reason.I have yet to even see a Cougar but it is still at the back of your mind that they are there.Even my wife has said she feels safer knowing I have a knife with me!
So please give this guy a break and come up with some good options as he has asked !

hi,

if price is not really a consideration, may i suggest chris reeve, strider, or busse.

with the reeves and striders many, many configurations. different blade lengths, shapes, finishes, steels, sheaths, on and on.

just noticed date when this thread was started !
Did you get a knife or did a cougar get you ????
