My son needs a pick-me-up, I want to send him a no occasion knife. About the only qualification is American Made. I have been searching all of the regular sites and come up with Benchmade Bug-out for my first choice unless someone comes up with a better solution. Help is appreciated.

A Hogue Deka is comparable in size, with g10 handles and better steel; and would be my choice over the bugout (*of note, the bugout had never appealed to me).
Also take a look at the Hogue Ritter, and some TRM offerings (I like the Atom; but the Neutron is pretty popular) - TRM might not be readily available.

Too many to mention and not enough criteria to offer a meaningful suggestion.

Just give your kid the knife you "think" he'd like and keep the receipt in case he doesn't and, if that's the case, then take him to the store (or the website) with you to let him pick out the one he wants.

Can't go wrong with a Spyderco Para 2,3, Manix 2, or yojimbo 2.

Sucks for the son then, doesn't it
No, it doesn't.

1. Is your son a *gear or tool* in general?

If he is, I might go for a pair of tools.

If he doesn't like tools, maybe a USA made pocket flashlight? Drop the Rebar MT for a Surefire?

2. Just a knife then ..
Another vote for the Hogue Deka.

Nothing wrong with a bugout. When it comes to BM, I am a 940 fan. Just really like the unique design, how light and easy it carries and how much blade it gives for size and weight.

It is not that bad....I know that there are some excellent knives made in China, but I would just rather support products made by Americans when I can.

I did look at the 940s but I just don't like the styling.
