Suggestions for a gift knife under $200.00

No, it doesn't.

1. Is your son a *gear or tool* in general?

If he is, I might go for a pair of tools.

If he doesn't like tools, maybe a USA made pocket flashlight? Drop the Rebar MT for a Surefire?

2. Just a knife then ..
Another vote for the Hogue Deka.

Too many to mention and not enough criteria to offer a meaningful suggestion.

Just give your kid the knife you "think" he'd like and keep the receipt in case he doesn't and, if that's the case, then take him to the store (or the website) with you to let him pick out the one he wants.
My "kid" is 40 years old. If I sent him a rusty Imperial toothpick he would treasure it. That is why I am looking for something a bit nicer.
A Hogue Deka is comparable in size, with g10 handles and better steel; and would be my choice over the bugout (*of note, the bugout had never appealed to me).
Also take a look at the Hogue Ritter, and some TRM offerings (I like the Atom; but the Neutron is pretty popular) - TRM might not be readily available.
I like the Deka, it is making the list.

I like the 110 idea. Thanks.

HK Exemplar. Made by Hogue, around $150, a little different than the Deka.

2 or 3 Kershaw Blurs.

Kershaw Launch series auto, whichever model floats your boat.

I've been carrying a White River Backpacker Pro similar to this for about a year and really like it. Mine has the black handle and they have more of a matte finish then they seem to have in the photo (not mirror polished).
With just the bare sheath, it sits nice and flat in the pocket and it's very comfortable in the hand.

There are a lot of great knives made in China these days. If it has to be American, and it will be used hard or dirty, Spyderco is my first inclination. They are an American company but some of their knives are made in other places. Here are just their American knives in this general price range:

Personally, I'd include the ones they make in Taiwan and Japan. Here is the wider list:

Also, definitely check out the Hogue knives. The RSK and Deka are popular for a reason. Have fun window shopping!

May not be American, but a SA Alox Pioneer or Farmer is always a good option, plain and simple ready for action. Since you like the Buck 110, what about the 112? Maybe even the Buck Slim Pro 110 or 112 in the better steel?

Hogue Ritter RSK. About the same price as a Bugout and pretty damn incredible. A lot more knife for the money compared to Bugout and I love my Bugout. Not to mention has a cool history behind it and supports a good knife related cause through Doug Ritter.

The Buck 110 Pro with G10 scales and S30V steel is a great knife , it's about $100.

Buck has them in Ebony too, directly from them and custom engraved for $100.
