Hello All,

My brother in law is graduating from college and we want to give him something nice that he can keep for a long time. To me a new knife seems the best choice, and since he likes spyderco I'm thinking we should stick with this brand. Part of my problem is, I don't recall exactly what models he already has. However, once I have a short list I or my wife will call my father in law to see if he has any on the list. So, if you had $100 to $150 budget for a college grad, what would you pick? He lives in Montana if that makes any difference.

go here www.knifecenter.com

click on "knives brand names"

They have all kinds and are where I do most of my shopping. Personally I'd do one of two things: introduce him to Benchmade or Al Mar. Or just stick with his brand, which is pretty well guaranteed not to backfire.

If it's a Spydey...I dig the hell outta that Captain model.

If he does not have either of these I would do a Military if he likes larger knives, and a Caly 3 if he prefers a smaller knife.

Thanks! I want to stick with Spyderco since we gave him a Kershaw Leek a few years back and I don't think he was impressed. But I know he likes and carries his smaller spyderco so I'm thinking maybe we can get him something that he might not pick up for himself. The specific knife that came to mind from reading this forum about a year ago is the Military. He likes a combo edge so we'd go with that if we did. Any thoughts on the Military? Is there something else that you can think of that we should consider?

I'd consider a high end Military like the S90V or the new Orange, both while they are still available easily.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Although, you say he usually carries smaller knives. The Military is definitely the opposite of small. It can be quite intimidating around people not familiar or used to knives. The Caly 3 is IMO a perfect EDC knife. The ergonomics are fantastic and the flat ground leaf shaped blade is perfect for everday tasks.

Depending on what he already owns and his preference for knife size, I would recommend the Sage, Military or one of the G-10 versions of the Delica or Endura.

Thanks everyone. For some reason I wasn't able to get this site to load yesterday evening. My wife was anxious to get something ordered since we are already cutting it close to have it to him on time. I started comparing the specs of the Military to my own EDC with a ruler, and I didn't realize just how big the Military is. We ended up ordering a Para Military for him from knifecenter.com with a serrated edge and a black handle. Hopefully he likes it, but if not the site looks like it has a good return policy.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.

Yeah there is no denying that the Military is big. The Paramilitary was a great choice and he should like it if he likes Spydercos. I have a Paramilitary and while I like the Military better, the Para is a great knife.

How about a Volpe.Sierra has them at a good price.Very nice knife, you will be impressed with the fit and finish

I would suggest a kopa. It's an elegant and small knife. I bought one of my best friends a nice kopa edition for graduating with his BS and for getting into med school.
