suggestions for a newb?

Spyderco Delica, Boker Trance or Benchmade 530 would all make excellent, relatively inexpensive SD blades, IMHO.

I know you're looking for only SD, but the reality is that a knife for SD will rarely if ever see any use. You need to get used to the idea of handling it, using it and drawing it. You need to get a sense of what the blade can do, how to upkeep the edge and keep the knife oiled. Get used to using your knife for all sorts of tasks so you don't think of your knife as a "weapon" but a tool, and keep it sharp. The more you use (and practice with) your knife the more confidence you will have in it. I peel and cut fruit with my knives, do food prep with my larger folders and fixeds, and I whittle at wood and (most importantly) open boxes containing more knives. The knife is the last-ditch SD weapon, in my eyes. You don't want to get nailed for using it in any kind of minor defense situation.

carrot really good points, I wish you would say this in the prac tac forum. When I was in the navy going on shore leave, I would leave any knife behind, it was really easy to get into fights while running with guys I hung with. the last thing I wanted to have on me was a knife. When you are in a fight, you forget reason, you want to win at any cost. It is more likely you are going to get into a fight than a self defense situation. The knife is going to be more of a liability than an asset. Save the knife for the woods or for chores. Your wits are the best self defense weapon you have. SOOOOOO much troube is AVOIDABLE. If you are really worried about self defense, dont turn to a knife, think about what you can do to elimate threats, change routines that put you in danger. My brother in law works in allentown PA, tells me how dangerous it is, he has bought a tactical folder at 42 years old , his first. I have told him that he in all likelihood the knife will never get deployed in a spontaneous attack anyway and that he lacks the experience and judgement as to when to use it. Alot better is to change jobs, get out of that dangerous stituation all together.

Are you kidding?! If I said that in prac tac I'd probably get shot!

lulwut, you're not a participant in a certain infamous image board are you?

I'm just never surprised by how whenever someone brings up self defense, suddenly ex-Navy SEALS who have black belts in three different martial arts and studied law come out of the woodworks.

And of course, the unspoken assumption is that a user's post count is always indicative of how much he knows.

(And yes, I do visit a popular image board every once in a while, but less so recently, as it has been full of AIDS.)

I personally carry a gun for self defense. I am not trained in knife fighting.
