Suggestions for a traditional knife with bottle opener

You got info about that? I didn't get a beer scout in the last round, still kicking myself. Is there any news of a stainless Beer Scout, that's what I'd been holding out for.

contact your friendly dealer as was mentioned.

GEC #153216 Beer Scout
Description: #15 Tidioute Beer Scout - Sheepfoot blade/cap lifter, beer scout shield, bail at end, easy open notch, 1095 carbon. Brass liner, NS Bolster

Hey all, I managed to find a sweet Beer Scout in ebony from another forum member....can't wait till it arrives. Thanks all for your suggestions, I learned a lot!

Seriously, this is the only genuinely effective US made Crown Cork cap lifter I have ever used. The rest have always left something to be desired.

I guess mileage varies. I have had a problem with, I think, one knife-bound bottle opener, and that was an early Chinese. (No offense to the Chinese; I'm sure they're doing them fine by now.)

And wasn't there a lot of talk some time past about having to file a GEC bottle opener to make it work properly?

Expecting to be corrected-

With bottle openers on every key ring, every other money clip, and most pocket gadgets, not to mention the sharp surfaces around any typical hotel room, Patagonia belt buckles etc, I would never seek out a knife just to include a bottle opener. I would much rather have an extra blade.

The knife I carry nearly daily is a standard 4-blade camper/scout pattern. Blade, awl/scraper, can opener, and bottle-cap lifter/screwdriver. They are available new and used, in a large variety of scales (though most are made to resemble jigged bone), and come from a large variety of makers.

It's now a prettier since I cleaned up the steel a little, but that's a Camillus Army Engineer’s knife, ca. 1942-44. The four blades still have about 40% original mirror polish remaining.

The blades/tools are all quite useful for various things other than what they were designed for. The longer prong of the can opener is great for cleaning under the fingernails — not bad for small Phillips head screws, too — and the awl (if the tip and straight edge are sharpened, as I have done) is a great reamer and scraper for basic shop. One of these campers + a Vic Classic outfits you for a surprising amount of fiddly tool work.

True. But I also find I use the straight bade of the cap lifter to pry or dig at things just as often or if not more than opening bottles. Definately a good tool to have IMO.

One of my favorite non GEC cap poppers is the vintage camco equal end. Long pull spear main and cap lifter secondary. This is not my photo. Glennbad is putting some butterscotch micarta on mine so it's not available for pics. Search "camco" in the folding knife section of the big auction site. They can still be found in great condition. Cheers

Stainless 2 piece British Army Knife. Can opener is thoughfully designed to take off bottle caps as well.

My Tuna Valley Scout has a great cap lifter. And the stag is stunning to boot!

Glad you found your Beer Scout! Enjoy it! GEC also has a run of #15 Boy's Knives coming with the same configuration as the Beer Scout but without the bail or shield. I'm really looking forward to those!

The GEC Crown Lifter with the clip blade would probably be my favorite traditional with a cap-lifter, but I was too late to the game to get one and haven't been able to grab one on the exchange. Maybe some day. :D

And just for the heck of it, here are some pics of traditionals with cap-lifters:

I like the Alox Bantam's combo tool - bottle opener, can opener, screwdriver, wire-bender/stripper. Can openers are like hen's teeth when you need them, and the combo tool opens rearward, not forward.
