Suggestions for a whittler

Bartleby, your ettrick suggestion is fascinating; I'd have never considered trying an ettrick for whittling. But what you say about the length and curve of the handle makes a lot of sense to me in terms of comfort. What shape and length blade does the one you've used have?

No, GT, the original blades work very well with no modification.

Thanks for the reply, Jeff.

5K Qs- Mine is a 2.5" wharnecliffe shaped blade, which is about standard for an ettrick. The handle works like a congress, so you reverse your grip for roughing (blade side up). The interesting thing that I notice is that the narrow shape of the handle, and narrow blade toward the point, allows me to hold it almost like a pen, giving good control for detailing. I gave one to a buddy that does furniture carpentry and he has been carrying it for EDC for about a half a year, and has been pleased.

I ended up purchasing a Boker beer barrel whittler. Just got it yesterday & am loving it so far. Now to start watching some more sharpening youtube vids.
Any that you would recommend?

tks again for the help guys!

Glad you like it, since that's what I recommended. That beer barrel is attractive too.

Not sure what you're using to sharpen with, but if you select a Spyderco Sharpmaker those come with a nice product video.

Here is a locking whittler I made from an old TL-29 electrician's knife.

It took a while to grind the locking blade into a Wharncliffe, but works really well.
