This is my first post here in the Forums. I have been considering buying a Spyderco for a while now...was interested in suggestions anyone might have on a good starter? Thanks...

Though i call it "Skalpel" the official name is Vagabond.
If it comes down to extreme duties i'd suggest a Chinook2.
Just my 0.2$ :)

Whatever you decide, be sure to put the Sharpmaker kit on your shopping list also. It is a quality product that will keep your new Spydie factory sharp. You can also use it on just about any edged tool you have around the house or garage. The videotape that comes with the kit will show you how.

Welcome to Bladeforums. :)

It all depends on what you want to use it for, where you work, etc. My .02?- get an Endura or Delica, part serrated. Or a Calypso Jr.

I was in the same place as you, just last week. I ended up getting the Calypso Jr. Serrated. I got it on Ebay for $35 shipped, it arrived yesterday morning.
This morning I am back on Ebay and I just bought a Sharpmaker 304 and a Calyso Jr. plain edge. I think I am done for now, but who knows? Nice knives!!!

BDNX,I can see from your post that you understand that one leads to another, and another, etc. That said get a Delica with edge type of your choice, next get the Sharpmaker sharpener and work your way on up.tom. ;)

I'd get a plain edge Delica or Enrura. The size difference between the two is substantial, so think about whether you want small or big. Both are great.

I don't have a Native, but I've handled them in shops. I don't think you'd go wrong with that choice either.

I agree with everyone who says get a 204 Sharpmaker sharpener as well. Spydies come very sharp, but with use no knife stays that way forever. The only way to truly appreciate the quality of VG-10 is to see how easily it sharpens on a 204 and what a fine edge it takes.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I kinda figured from reading posts here that the Endura or Delica might have been the way to go. I do also like the Native and Calypso, Jr. so far. Think I might be leaning towards the latter at this point...but we'll see. Anywho, thanks again and I look forward to hearing from more of you soon!

I'll second to that. Spyderco knives are all reliable and perform great, so pick the one that is eye appealing to you.
For me, that would be the Delica.

I guess it's a matter of how many Spydercos you'd like to purchase in the long run. Some people start small and work their way up. I'm with golok though. Just get the Military and enjoy the fact that you bought the cream of the crop on the first try.

PE Delica, but give the SS a shot. It's nicer, IMHO. Spyderco does a fine job on Aus-6.

The Calypso Jr. would be a great choice too, and probably be the best performer.

Whatever you get, make sure you pick up a Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker.

Calypso Jr all the way. If you don't get one now, you'll regret it when they aren't available anymore.

How about the Salt I? What I've heard about the corrosion resistance woulda appeal to me especially with the humidity around here and my unfortunate tendency to sweat a great deal. Can anyone offer more information about this model? Thanks..
