Suggestions for folders to use while wearing winter gloves

needed please. I’m going to be spending more time in northern AZ for the next several years, and it gets a lot colder there compared to where I live now in TX. I have a Tenacious that works ok w/thick winter gloves, but I would like to upgrade the steel. I prefer liner or frame locks for this application. Budget isn’t of great concern, as I am looking for a production knife, and not a custom or high-end mid-tech. Obviously this will be a larger knife than my more preferred 3-3.5” size.

I believe that a Spyderco Military would fit my needs well, so I am leaning in that direction. Lockbar access seems to be good, and I would imagine that the thumbhole deployment should work w/gloves. But I would love to read about other suggestions and experiences, especially from people who live in areas that get snow every winter.

thanks!

Did you mean Alaska? I know the desert gets cold at night but for most folks you'll be pretty good with unlined leather gloves like Mechanix wear for example and a relatively chunky knife with a slightly prominent lock.

Something like an Endura, Stretch or Police with the backlog would be good to look over.

New photo thread idea. Knives in snow.

The Military was the knife I thought of when I read your post title. You're definitely on the right track with that one. :)

Not sure what your budget is, but on the frame lock on my Medford Praetorian G has the most accessible lockbar of any frame lock I've ever owned.

And if you're willing to consider a back lock, some of the larger Tri-Ad Lock knives from Cold Steel also seem like good options -- particularly the 4-Max Scout, which has a generous cutout and easy access to its massive thumb stud.

Spyderco Military or Endura. I use both of those knives at work with gloves on. Using knives with gloves gets your knife pretty nasty though, so be sure to clean them off afterwards!

Spyderco Military or Police would be my suggestion, I likethe police because a backlock is easy to use in gloves, but the Military should give you plenty of space to manipulate things, so if a liner lock is your preference the military will be a solid choice. That said, the just released XM-24 Sheepsfoot would probably be what I would buy if I was in your position lol.

AZ stands for Arizona. Elevations between 5600’ and 9000’. Sometimes quite a lot of snow. Unlined work gloves aren’t going to cut it (knife forum joke), for me anyway.

Thanks. I will look at the XM-24. Do you know if the XM-24 has better lockbar access than the Half-track? The H-T is the only Hinderererrrer I own. It’s definitely not my most favored knife....

A couple more I just tried.

Cold Steel AD 10
Cold Steel Voyager
Spyderco Police

Interestingly enough I couldn’t reliably close any of my ZT framelocks or my XM 24. I had no problem closing a Spyderco Military framelock.

Thanks for the tip. Nice to know the Military works for someone who uses them while wearing gloves at work.

Thanks for the effort! I tried a few of my ZT’s with gloves, and found that they aren’t ideal for my situation. I will check out the C.S. knives right now.

It's one of the few production folders that I have found, that you can actually still open and close with gloves on. I can do it with the Endura, but takes more finagling.

I think the jimping on the lockbar helps with the gloves grabbing and successfully moving it over to close the knife.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately for me, my Medfords (cf Infraction and a Micro P-T) are in AZ and I am TX, so I can’t try them out with gloves. I am a bit concerned that the angled face of the lockbar’s thumbpad contact area might be somewhat slippery while wearing gloves. At any rate, my last interaction with MKT wasn’t great, so it’s not likely that I purchase another Medford. But, if I find one at a good price, who knows.....

Quite possible.

Spyderco Delica 4 worked fine too.
