Suggestions for knife to give my Dad for Christmas

what about boker knifes?

Boker has really gone downhill lately. They appear to be making copies of other ,anufacturers knives. There is a Gerber Freeman copy, a Randall Made Knife copy, even a copy of the ZT0777. I just noticed this last night as was wondering what the hell was going on.

I would suggest anything by Case or Buck.Does he prefer carbon or stainless, synthetic or natural handle material. If he likes carbon and natural I'd get a Case.If it's stainless I'd give the nod to Buck, their stainless is better(my op).-Jim

That's what I was thinking, you can't go wrong with a Buck or Case.

Hey,if you get him a Buck,it's backed by a forever warrenty.That's never a bad deal anymore.:)-Jim

I was thinking about getting my dad an opinel. You can get them monogrammed and they have a classy old world look. It would sit on his workbench and replace his cheap harbor freight folder for various task like trimming cigars etc.

It might be an Old Timer or an Uncle Henry, not really sure it is fake bone necessarily. Like I said, while I love knives, I am no expert. It looks like bone, it could be imitation stag if they make that, but I didn't think a bone or real stag would crack and fall away like his did, which is why I probably incorrectly surmised it was a "fake bone."

I do recall that part of the handle is broken and missing where one of the rivets are. We'll have a lot more information tomorrow when I snag it for a few minutes and get some pictures. This is a recent idea of mine and I hadn't closely observed his knife in the past, I'm running on a few minor recollections, and my aunts input, right now. I just know he hates sharpening it, so it's dull, and it is beat to hell. He's 62, so I really want to get him that highly durable, great knife that he'll have the rest of his life hopefully or at least the next 10-20 years, and that I will have to sharpen rarely. Of course, I'm hoping he hits 100, so here's to him getting 40 more years out of this knife I buy.

I made my own sharpner and it works wonders. I can seam to get any one to order the sticks for me so right now I cant make any more.

What about a sodbuster a more modern twist on the classic I'm not a fan of these types but the sod buster looks great.
These are by imperial schrade .

case make a sodbuster. I have a brand new one just sitting on my table right now. I have not even unwrap the paper that they come in when they are in the box.

First I want to commend you for your thoughtful gift to your Dad..he will appreciate and cherish because it came from you.

Again, your Dad will appreciate a thoughtful gift from his son.

Best.

Thanks, Unk. I am very close to my Dad and I know it will mean a lot to him as it does me.

Thanks again to everyone for helping. I snagged it away from him tonight under the guise of just sharpening and snapped these pictures. I also determined it's a Case Mini-Copperlock, each tile on my counter is 4" and it is shy of that. Ya'll can see the horrid cracking, I couldn't figure out what the material was in my brief few minutes with it. Sorry about the less than stellar pictures, I was trying to be rather unassuming so he wouldn't notice me photographing it.

As far as price I'd like to spend more than $50, but try to keep it under $200.

Thanks in advance fellas!

You can get a new Bradley Alias I (3.5" blade) or Alias II (3" blade) of blue anodized titanium scales for less than $200. That is what I would do. I have purchased three of those folders to use as Xmas presents within the last couple of months.

First i would say check what the laws are where your dad lives. Where my dad lives it is 3" limit. So i bought him a Spyderco Sage 1 and a BM Emissary. He loves them both but carries the Spydie the most. He said he really likes the carbon fiber.

I just bought a Buck Prince Wolf Spirit by Wilde Bill Cody for my Dad. His birthday is tomorrow , but we'll be getting together for dinner on Friday night. I bought it from Knifeworks, they had the best price, right at the top of your price range but truly worth it in my opinion. I don't know how to post a link, just google it and you'll see what a work of art it truly is. It looks even better in person. I hope that helps.

There are a few good ones to choose from from Case. I would check out the Case Bose line, with CV and SS blade steels. The swayback jack would make a great gift.

Something to keep in mind is your father's carrying habits. I've gotten my father about twenty knives in the past ten years, and he's lost most of them. He likes small pen knives, and wants something to cut some string, clean his fingernails, or scrape a battery cable, terminal, etc. He is an auto upholsterer, and uses a pair of upholstery shears for most of his work. At home, he uses a Leatherman field tool I got him (sort of garden shears with a multitool in the swivel handle). He loses his knives in the laundry all of the time. I've usually gotten him knives I've been able to recondition from antique/junk malls for cheap. He would chastise me if I got him a Great Eastern or Queen etc and knew the price. Keep these things in mind when you buy him a gift.

This is no problem since he and I are both Police Officers. Thanks for thinking about it though!

Alrighty fellas, I went ahead and bought a Case Mini Copperlock with a genuine stag handle. I decided to stick with what he had, don't want to take any departure from that as I know he is comfortable with the blade layout and such. I have been in touch with a hand engraver 40 miles from where I live who is going to put some scroll-work on the bolster along with my Dad's initials. I think I'll also have him put a little scroll work on the blade, but not too much. When I get the final result in, I'll snap a couple pics for you guys. Thanks for all the help and input!!

NVMD.... just noticed you got a Case 👍

The Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC) #14 Boys knife has been available for a while and it is about 3" closed and available in one or two blade models. VERY nice little pocket knife and high quality. I purchased one and was very impressed. Something a bit larger, maybe a #72 Trapper pattern (jack knife).

Just noticed this thread is from 2012.... oh well.

OP, you should get your dad a GEC and a hand-written apology for being four years late with his gift...:rolleyes::D

Considering that the knife you linked was released in August of 2012, I don't think it would have been available for Christmas of 2011.

Nice gesture, but please don't bump necro threads.
