Hello, I am in the market to getting a new survival knife in the 5 inch blade range. I own several fixed blades but they are either too big or too small. I own the Becker BK-2, and I like that size and that is the size I am looking for but I don't really like the quarter inch blade stock, since it makes it difficult to do anything but chop and baton. So any suggestions on a 5 inch survival knife that is in the size range of the bk-2 but not as thick? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Pitt

Mora Clipper is around 17 dollars if the Bushcraft is more than you want to spend.

ESEE for high carbon, costs about twice compared to Beckers, also uses 1095, full tang, stock micarta scales and molded nylon sheath. Fallkniven for stainless, don't know how much they cost, uses Lam VG-10, full tang, synthetic handle and leather or zytel sheath. Survive! for semi stainless, costs about 3 time higher than Beckers, uses CPM 3V or Elmax if you can find a first production run, full tang, micarta scales and kydex sheath.

Just saw bark river brava 1 at bladehq. falkniven f1, tops b. o. b. knife is 3/16 4.5 inches.

I would consider looking at the custom knives that come up for sale here in the exchange, great stuff great prices, may not be exactly 5 inches. I have seen Wolf Creek forge knives come up frequently. She has a hunter up for sale right now, 4 1/2 blade 01 carbon steel at 1/8 thickness, Micarta handle. If you want contact her, Lisa West and she can come up with one for you too.

What ever you pack every day is really your survival knife. Because you never know when a survival situation is going to happen. I would go with the Mora too.

Koster Bushmaster ( 3V)
Spyderco Bushcrafter ( O-1) ( best ergonomics, most comfortable grips for hard use)
DPx HEST 4 ( Niolox ) or HEST 6 ( Sleipner) Niolox is a new breed of stainless that is tough ( er) and has good qualities. Sleipner is not stainless and has been discussed here before.

Koster @ $230
DPx @ $140-$160
Spyderco @ $180-190

Don't think the Spyderco is only good for "bushcraft". It's a very well made, excellent knife. I have all 3 and could get by with any of them.

One other maker that I know has great stuff and is willing to help you get it right is Chris from Big Chris knives. Works in all kinds of steels, including powder metal stainless steels, and makes different sizes. I have one he did as a cross between a camp knife and his smaller bushcrafter, called the camp crafter with a 3/16 01 blade about 6 inches long, great feel to the handle. He sold it here on the forums about a month or two ago, I will try to put the pics here. It was sold on 2-12-13 in the fixed blade section. Sorry I could not get it to copy over.

Check out the Becker BK16. Same build quality and materials as the BK2, but with a 4-3/8" blade and 'only' 0.4 lbs.

I'm also a fan of the ESEE knives. You might be interested in the ESEE 4 or 5.

And, as mentioned, there are some nice handmade / custom knives sold every day in the For Sale by Maker forum section. Might cost a little more than a Becker, but maybe not as much as a Fallkniven.

Here's a link with a comparing pic from a similiar thread:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/762020-Pic-request-Fallkniven-A1-and-Becker-BK2.

The FK S1 has worked for me in the mountains, but naturally there are plenty of choices in this size to choose from.

Here are a few of mine and I had a lot of joy in the search for them.

From left to right:
Fällkniven NL4 Frey, Fällkniven PHK, Bark River Aurora, Bark River Sperati Point, Mora Bushcraft black, Mora HQ Robust.

The FK's will be the most expensive with the Mora's as the cheapest and the BR's in between.
They will all do the job and it's more of personal preference what route to go.

The FK S1 is in the same size as the Frey.

Regards
Mikael
