Suggestions for new pipe smoker around camp

Cobs are really the way to go for the outdoors.

If you insist on briars for the outdoors, I recommend either military mounts or at least stems that can be easily removed repeatedly without worry of loosening the tenon fit (like the ones below).

Corn cob pipes smoke well and there is no break in period essentially. But they don't last long relative to a regular briar pipe. But they're cheap.

The MM Legend in my post just above this one is nearly ten years old, but I've had several not last nearly as long. A cob can last if you don't hot box it and take care not to kill it when cleaning it. The stem was replaced a couple of time, but I bought a fist full from MM for 25 cents per stem.

you can get some decent pipes here, they're basically factory seconds, but totally serviceable.

I have one or two flavors on hand.

drop me a pm, & I can hook you up W/some samples

That is a pretty amazing layout. You must be a confirmed piper. I am most comfortable overall with a bent shape.

It is very easy to "hot box" a pipe smoking outdoors with the wind, and the fact that you are probably involved doing some other activity at the same time.

Leghog, what is a miltary mount with a pipe?

If you drop a pipe with the army bit, it can break right behind that collar. Ask me how I know? But that design is probably the easiest to replace the stem and still look good.

Tried super glue on the wood; worked for a while. But that pipe was pretty much toast.

Have been burning the "Leaf" since 1969, started off with SWR. Still have my first 'good' pipe a City DeLuxe,
which is a budget label GBD.

I'ts the 2nd one down, top left corner.

I dug around in my stuff and found an old pipe that was found in my brothers house when he was renovating, it's a Yello-bole Imperial model 624, and is briar. I sanded it down and lightly oiled it, and cleaned up the bowl and stem.

Today I went to a local tobacco shop and saw a bunch of ten dollar missouri cobs so I grabbed one of those as well, and a tin of cheap tobacco, Danish Black Vanilla. (Also grabbed some pipe cleaners and a little 3 in 1 cleaner tool)

Not a great tobacco, bit too sweet smelling, like black forest chocolate cake pretty much, but reminds me of Captain Black cigars which I have enjoyed in the past, so not too bad. Hope to get away for a hike soon to really try it and give the cob a bit of a break in.
I hear you can order online from the USA pretty easy if under 200g so I will be looking for some of the ones that have been listed here.

No filters on any of mine. I agree with the corncob's for outdoors as well. Tobacco- I really like Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding and Mississippi River. Drew Estate makes a couple of good ones too. Don't waste your time on bargain basement stuff like Captain Black, no point in relaxing with a pipe with Walmart tobacco unless you have never smoked one before. Even then I would start with something better than what you can find at local convenience store. Check out a cigar/pipe store near you for recommendations.

In short, you can get a cheap corn cob pipe that will work well for you, but junk sh!t tobacco I wouldn't recommend cheaping out on. That's the whole experience, enjoying the taste of a good tobacco, and I personally don't see the point/find any enjoyment in drug store tobacco.

Yup. It's all about the tobak and the smoke. That's why those who truly know know the cob is an excellent pipe since it consistently provides an cool dry smoke. I prefer English blends. Latakia is king. Squadron Leader and Esoterica Penzance for me. Luckily I cellared much of both years ago. If those are hard to come by, McClelland's Old Dog comes in a close second. It's from the old Ashton line. A revived English blend with Cyprian Latakia and Macedonian Xanthis. Yes, always keep in mind it's about the tobak and the smoke first and foremost. The pipe is just a tool allowing the enjoyment of the tobak.
