What shaped blade do you like? Spyderco's very popular with many knife guys, but others hate the looks of it. It's generally a smallish spoon-sized blade...short, stabby-looking thing with a hole punched in it. Steel's good, though it's never grown on me.
Kershaw packs a lot of bang for the bucks...er...soon to be Ameros, I fear. But some of its blades go all over the place. I liked them enough to buy several, the latest being a Vapor. The AUS6 blade, though, is a little soft. Lots of folks like the Storm and Storm II. The Leek also is a fine knife, especially the one with the Damascus blades. Very reasonably priced for what you get and dang if it ain't a beautiful folder that's good at cutting.
CRKT M21-04
CRKT makes a great knife, the M21-04. It has a broad, strong, spear-point AUS8 blade, smooth, comfortable aluminum grips and an automatic safety (AutoLAWKS). It's a beautiful, all purpose knife that you'll keep forever.
Cold Steel makes a number of very nice folders. The Recon 1 is superb. It and the CRKT ride a bit high if you use the pocket clips. (I carry mine in my back pocket and often in my side pockets without the clip, but if it's an issue, you may want to check them out. Oh, and the Recon 1 has a very nice AUS8 teflon-coated blade that comes in many configurations, all of them SHARP. The Recon 1 is a teeny bit heavy, but it's got a nice axis lock that holds at least 200 lbs. That's a pretty strong lock. (If they ever get a folder that's strong enough to hold Lynn Thompson, I'm going to be the first in line to get one!)
Last but not least, I'd put my money on anything made by Benchmade. They're as solid as a knife can be for their price. I'd like to buy something in black.
