Suggestions for Ontario Fixed Blade

I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive large fixed blade to keep in the car for emergencies of all sorts. I'm somewhat taken by the Bowie Survival, Bolo, and Marine Raider Bowie.

Specifically, I'm looking for something with only one sharpened edge, a good amount of length, and a sharp tip.

The Tanto 10 seems like a nice knife as well, but I wouldn't want to have to convince someone that it's not a sword.

I have the Bolo, and it's quite a knife. It really cuts better for me than a long machete, and is easier for me to keep nice and sharp. Comes with a good Cordura-type out the front sheath that swings out of the way when not needed. I have seen some of them around at a good price, too!

I have the Survival Bowie model, and it gave me years of use. And as a teenager that liked to chop everything, that's saying something. It's cheap, feels good in the hand, and is a pretty efficient chopper with a versatile design.

The Ontario machetes are worth checking out, too. I have a 12" blade in my trunk -- can be found easily for $15-$20 US dollars. It is very stout, closer to 5/32" stock than the advertised 1/8", weighing in at a blade-heavy 18 oz.

In their bigger blades, I find Ontario's machete-style handles (basically, two plastic scales pinned to a full tang) much better than the plastic, "stacked leather" style on their knives. I bought a $1 24-yard roll of sports tape for hockey sticks and wrapped maybe 10 ft of it in two layers -- very secure grip that effectively absorbs shock.

Finally, to keep it from cutting up things in the trunk, I've stapled together two big pieces of cardboard with a plastic lining (custom sheath!)

Smear oil along its edge and it's ready to go.

SP 10 Marine Raider Bowie

It's the best of all worlds, thick and heavy enough for chopping and digging, but with an efficient clip point for stabbing, puncturing, thrusting, back cuts, etc. It has a real metal crossguard in addition to the usual rubber grips, so it is the only SP model safe for hard stabbing. You might need to puncture an oil can or something. The slightly longer SP 18 Frontiersman Bowie is faster if you want a dueling bowie, but the Marine Raider is the heavy duty all around tool.

I second the Marine Raider. I just gave my endorsement of it in another post!!!
