My father-in-law wants a small folder for Christmas, so I am in charge. Most of the knives in chain stores aren't great, so I would like to get him something a little better. Looking for the following.

Small folder under 3 inches
Good quality steel
Belt\pocket clip
50 bucks max
He works in hospital so wears scrubs a lot so the knife needs to be light to not weigh them down.
Thanks!!!

Spyderco Native from Walmart, but that might be too tactical for a hospital.

Consider a Victorinox Soldier in silver Alox, or a Vic Farmer or Pioneer (I like the blue scales). The Alox scales are pretty classy looking, as well as non-threatening. They're not a super-steel, but they sharpen up nicely.

You want a Mini Griptilian 555HG for $6 more you get:

I recommend knifeworks.com (best price) link here:

Kershaw Random Leek would be my bet for the best knife under $50, and the blade is 3".

It does not have a pocket clip but a small Case stockman is my edc, and I get compliments on it. Mine is a 6244 model. They come in 2 blades or 3 and are under 3 inches. Try collectorknives.com They are a great on line store. "Mike" is real honest and a straight shooter.

My vote goes to:

Spyderco Delica, Salt 1
Benchmade: Mini Griptilian (if you're willing to go about $6-10 higher)

Here's something with a lot more soul than a typical plastic handled knife. The blade is juuust under 3 inches, it's made of good 12C27. The very light handle is made of compressed birch that is warm to the touch (nice for winter work), it features a strong lockback, and it's made by a norwegian company who are known for quality since more than 100 years. In my opinion it doesn't look particularly threatening, which can be a plus. There's only one element missing from your wish list: it doesn't have a clip, but the (more expensive) gift edition of the knife comes with a nice moose leather sheath. The standard edition comes with a moose leather lanyard. There is also a cheaper variant, the classic Eka 88 that was (lovingly) discussed here before. It's basically the same with a more classic handle.
Here is the excellent Eka Masur, one of my faves. Now this offers true old-world charm:

Kershaw: the Scallion, Leek, or Junkyard Dog, just to name a few...

Check out my sig for some examples in your price range...

Get a Griptilian off Ebay. You can often find them there for like $45.00 plus shipping. Good knife. One of the best lock designs out there.

+1 more for the Spyderco Dragonfly, 1.2 oz, 2 & 5/16 inch vg10 steel blade with a full flat grind. Seems perfect for what he wants. If you order one online make sure you get the vg10 version not the older aus 8. you can also get it with a white FRN handle if you think the black or steel is too tacticool for a hospital. you can check them out here: White Black Stainless
