The city I live in has a three inch blade length limit for personal carry knives. I have very little experience with folding knives and would apreciate any suggestions you folks might have. The knife would be used for basic utility purposes and last ditch effort defense use.

What price range are you looking at?

<$50.00 - Spyderco Delica, the best knife for the money, top quality with great service.

<$100.00 - Benchmade 705, very good lock, sleek and useful shape. You will want to check out a reliable dealer to get one with good quality.

<$300.00 - Small Sebenza, the most reliable folder made, great steel, the best CQ and service in the Industry.

<$400.00 - Small Apogee, beautiful design, excellent application of the Integral Bar Lock, terrific steel, and Darrel backs his work Totally.

<$500.00 – The world is your oyster, pick a maker and design, customize to your own specs, have fun.

Well I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. Spyderco has a pretty good selection of 3" and under knives that would suit your needs just fine. Spyderco's are hard to beat for the price.

If you want to spend a little more then you might consider a William Henry Persian Folder or Kestrel. Both knives have blades under 3" and they are really good knives.

I must say I totally agree on the Spyderco's. I have been a user of these knives for a number of years now. For a 3" limit there are more than a few models to choose from. Check the internet dealers and see which one you like. They are all good for utility task and would make a find tool for self defense. Hope this helps.

Ahh..., may I suggest a Spyderco Calypso Jr? It's flat ground with 2 7/8" blade. Definitely one of my favorite less-than-3"-knives.

. My vote is for the aforementioned (by StJames) Benchmade 705 Mini-Axis. You've got different options to play with in terms of coatings and serrations, and I really can't think of a finer little knife (did I mention it's my favorite folder?). It defies wear, ages beautifully, and fits the bill for a custom-quality user at a decent price. Professor.

One note of caution. I think the "new" Spyderco Delica98's blade is 3 and 1/8". It would suck to be arrested for an 1/8". I know that is a stretch but you never know. Spyderco or Benchmade would be a good place to start. Quality knives and if you have any problems their customer service is top notch. Personally if I could only have one sub 3" blade from either company it would be a BM 705 mini-axis or the Spyderco Wegner Jr. But the Spyderco calypso jr. is sweet and the BM mini-stryker would fit you requirements and... Best bet would be try to go to a knife shop or a gun/knife show and handle them all and see what you like. Good luck in your search.

I heartily agree with the suggestion of one of several Spydercos. The Delica is my pick.

If you want additional utility from your knife, I would encourage you to look into a Swiss Army Knife(SAK). The Victorinox Tinker offers two blades, slotted and Phillips screwdrivers, bottle opener, can opener(fantastic tool

), punch/awl, toothpick, tweezers and keyring attachment. The Super Tinker also has scissors. Either knife has a large blade of less than 3" and can be had for less than $30.00.

Measured from either the leading part of the handle along the spine or its cutting edge, the REKAT Pioneer blade length (at least the drop point model) falls in the less than 3" category. It is a heavy duty user with one of the strongest locking mechanisms on the market and is more than adequate for last or first ditch use. MSRP is $149 for a black finish model and less $10 for the stonewash finish. Good tough knife!

If going lite in price and weight then it' s the old standby, the Spyderco Delica.

As already mentioned, if you wanted to spend around $90 the Benchmade 705 mini-axis lock would be a great bet.
If you wanted something less expensive Spyderco makes many good folders. My favorite would be the Spyderco Calypso Jr - Model 52. They come in various handle materials: Zytel, Micarta, and Stainless Steel. The Zytel is called the Calypso Jr. Lightweight and has the best blade steel of the three, it is VG-10. But you wouldn't go wrong with any of them.

Thank you all for your responses. I know I'm a night owl, but you guys have me beat by a long shot.

The suggestions given were great, I've been checking out the websites of almost all the manufacturers mentioned. There will be a Gun Show this weekend where several knife dealers usually participate so I'll shop and compare some of the suggested knives. If I pick one up I'll let you all know about it.

Again thanks for the info.
