suggestions for small lockback

I'm looking for something like a Spyderco Kiwi (i.e. traditional looking small lockback, non-threatening to sheeple), but I don't think it will see enough use to justify the cost of a Kiwi.

Any suggestions? Like, for example, a Case Copperlock, or...? That's why I'm asking - I suspect I would overlook some obvious candidates. Thanks!

As an owner of a Kiwi and a few older traditional pocket knives. I'd reccomend buying the Kiwi. Better steel, easier opening, better fit and finish then almost any traditional pocket knife.

You'll probably find that you'll use it more and get more pleasure from using it then you think.

Get a stainless steel Kiwi. Many have them on sale for $35-45. Like another poster said, the Kiwi is fairly high priced, but it is really a great smaller knife.

What about other Spydercos. I just ordered Navigator and my brother ordered Dragonfly for similar purposes.

I bought my first Navigator because the price was so great, then I bought another one at a higher price because the lil' sucker is just a great little knife. You get a lot of cutting power in a small package.

I thought about getting the stainless Kiwi, but it *seems* (?) like it would be a lot less sheeple friendly ("Hey, why are you carrying that box cutter?"). The bone handles are a criteria to consider.

Yes, it shouldn't be this way, but it's the world I live in during my workdays...

By the way, I do have a Dragonfly, which is the current sheeple-friendly folder I carry. I guess I'm looking for a blade shape that's less beefy....(like the Kiwi, or alternative..)...

Well if you only take it out when you're actually using it, they won't have to ask why you're carrying it.

"Why are you carrying that box cutter?" (watches you cut open a box) "Ohhhh, nevermind."

Spend some time looking at AG Russell's knives, most specifically the AG branded pieces.

He offers some great designs in premium steels for reasonable prices.

SOG Twitch 1. This is the knife you are looking for. If you want something a tad larger, then the Twitch 2. It has a superb AUS-8. I've had a good deal of AUS-8 knives, but this has the best edge retention of them all. It has an assisted opening, and the back lock is modified to accomodate a flipper. Carries easily, not too bulky.
A good knife.

How 'bout one of the small Al Mar's? A Hawk or Osprey
Here's another vote for the Al Mar Hawk. It's definitely on my short list of must have knives. ;)

One good choice would be a Moki Silver Feather. All stainless lockback with a blade under 3". Non threatening to sheeple too.

You'd do yourself well to look at the Spyderco Kiwi or the Al Mar Osprey. I carry both from day to day and they are both as close to custom as you can get for the price.

Have you considered something without a lock such as a slipjoint? There are many different models to choose from, and are the definition of sheeple friendly. Look at some of the models that Queen offers for example, they have many in D2 steel and under $50. You could also carry a beefier locking blade in case you need one, this way you have the best of both worlds. Might be worth considering.

I would tend to think that anything all stainless, or some synthetic (G-10 for example) handled knives would scream tactical, to sheeple anyway. Thus a nice folder with some type of natural scale material is more likely to be accepted.
