Suggestions for some new shoes...

Alright. I'm tired. This is the 2nd pair of Redwings I've blown through in less than a year. These clodhoppers are now cold and they leak. Now, I understand I can be a tad harsh on my shoes: I use them for everything. Hiking. Work. Play. Trail running. You name it. And I have flat feet. But? Am I missing something? My previous pairs lasted longer than this.

Anyway: I'm looking for suggestions for a new set of footwear, that must do pretty much everything mentioned in the first paragraph. My only criteria? The MUST be below the ankle. I hate boots. I'll look at cheap or expensive, it matters not to me. I think I'm done with Redwings though..

Any help?

Brian

I don't trail run so this reccomendation may be inapproriate.

I've been happy with Ecco walkers. They have worn very well for me.

Hi Max Thunderstone / Brian-

Your best bet is to purchase TWO pairs of shoes and rotate. Nothing will kill shoes faster than constant wear without a chance to dry and regain shape with a high-quality pair of cedar shoe trees stuffed inside.

The money you invest will go much further if you follow this strategy. If you can step up to THREE pairs, you'll be in even better shape. I rotate between five pairs of day-to-day business shoes and have worn some for nearly ten years with moderate care and sole replacement.

Timberland might have something that fits your needs. They have excellent arch support.

I will have to disagree with the recommendation for Timberland boots. I find that while they are comfortable and break in quickly, they also wore out rather quickly. I found that the boots also wear out in less than a year of constant, rather hard wear. So if you are looking for something to last longer you might want to consider that.

I've also got some issues with Timberland. My boots have been fine (although a bit uncomfortable) and work really well on ice. However, I had a pair of Timberland shoes that wore through sooo quickly. For business casual, I haven't found anything better than Ecco! More comfortable than Rockports, just as light, and yet last much longer too.

i have 5 pairs of eccos and like them a lot

my favorite pair is this (01944)...i have had mine for 5 years and while i do not wear them everyday, they have held up very well

Would you consider elastic sided boots?

They're great and you don't need to bother with laces. Quite alright for hiking but not sure about trail running.

Redback is a good brand. I've got the elastic sided boots but they do sell low cut shoes.

Ecco is also a good suggestion but recently i've been looking at the Ecco designs and they're not that great.

I'd stay away from Timberlands. I used to love wearing timberland stuff but then they turned more into a designer brand and the quality has really suffered.

Blue Jays suggestion of rotating the shoes is spot on. I wear about 3 pairs through out the week. It takes about 24 hours for a shoe to fully dry.

I live in my Salomon Exit Lows.

Lightweight, cushioned, tough. I'm on my second pair. When they go to shoe heaven, I'll buy another pair.

Ima vasque sundowner classic man... got the gortex and will last me about 2 years per pair... i like the idea of rotating 2 pair. my first pair never gave out but they did shrink if that makes any sense... they are same size as the one's i have on when i bought them but now really hug my feet.

I like my New Balance 755's... they are on their last leg though...

Judging by the lack of any USA tags on New Balances current offerings at local stores, I'd hazard a guess that you'd have trouble finding them. They are techically walking shoes, but they have just enough curve in the toe to work as a runner... but be ok for standing.

They really hit a home run with those. I cant say the same for the attempted replacement New Balances I picked up a few weeks back. "Cheap Chinese Shoe" is all I can say for those. Bad enough that I switched back to my old 755's and had to nurse an in-grown toenail to boot!

Wow! How long did that take? Which model is your pair? It looks bad.

I do have to say that Eccos have lots of different types of soles. My Casual Classics have lasted nearly two years and they're not worn out yet. I do avoid wearing them in the rain/snow though (wear boots instead). I'm sure that helps some.

seawalkers...they are 6 years old but get worn 2-4 times/month

I was pissed and it costs like $60 to resole or $130 for a new pair

but you can see that the leather and stitching holds up well for my "No maintenance ever" shoes :D

Looks the same as my issued Navy dress shoes. But, somehow I doubt they are as cheap... :p

Hi Krefcenz-

Nice shoes if you're a businessman, but Max Thunderstone (the original poster) said the shoes would be used for work, play, trail running, and everything else. Let's see what your feet look like after running five miles in Moab, Utah with them kicks on yer' feet.

Voodoo,
I have a friend that worked in the Nordstroms shoe dept, and when the same thing happened to my Ecco's he told me that they had had some problems with the sole compound and to bring them in. When I went in, he wasn't working but they took them right back as the problem seemed to be common knowledge with all of the people working. They were four years old at the time, and they exchanged them for a new pair without any questions. You might call the store where you got them and ask...He also said the compound on the new shoes is much better and they haven't had many problems lately...
