I'm looking for recommendations for a nice small survival kit to store in the handle of my Moutaineer II. I am thinking of fishing line, 2 small fish hooks, a couple of small split shot sinkers, some boat matches, water purification tabs, small fire striker. Any other ideas and ideas on appropriate containers to pack it all in would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Scott

Scott,

This questions get asked every now and then and you'l lget a million different answers. I would do a search on the subject in the Achives or current threads and see what comes up. The items that you have suggested are tops in my book except the water purification tablets. They have a tendency to get rattled around in the handle and wind up turning to dust. I have 2 hooks, some fishing line, a few split shots, matches of course, and a $50 bill (hey, ya' never know). In the cap end I stuff a bit of lint from the dryer. It makes a great fire starter!

Ken,
Thanks for the inputs the $ idea is a good one as well.

Thanks!

I too have the mountaineer II,wonderful knife.I use mine almost every weekend backpacking and camping.I had a Kydex sheath made to carry mine along with a DMT sharpener and a Fire Steel.Works great.I have learned lately that tender is very important to have and to keep dry, since it has rained on my last two outings.I have emptied everything else out of my handle and now use it to carry waxed paper strips that I ordered from Bagheera on the forums. They burn very well and work well with the firesteel.I can carry the other things in a small pouch on my belt.To me fire is more useful than some of the other small items.

I've got an Aviator, with a shorter handle. I keep a cylindrical magnesium firestarter and a button compass in mine. No room for anything else.

My vote is for fire also. My Sable IV has a handle about the same size as your Mountaineer II and all I put in it are cotton balls and a small ferro rod. If I dip the cotton balls in an herbal skin salve that I keep in my little essentials kit, the ferro rod will strike it into a long burning flame in one stroke. The beeswax and oils sustain the flame. The next most important thing is a good poncho for shelter. That goes in my small daypack or waist pack. Have fun deciding.

In the Shadow I that had been in Chris' truck forever, we have water proof matches and striker pad, a couple of small safety pins, and some potent pain killers. If you carry any kind of tablets, try to get them in a clam-shell type of packaging - they may take up a bit more space but, if the tablet does disintergrate with vibration, you have it all contained. We wrap the different items in plastic wrap which acts as a great shock absorber. The $$ idea is a great one!

Ive got the vibration thing, the painkiller thing and the fire thing all figured out.

Fill the inside of the hollow handle with Everclear grain alcohol. It's very high proof will kill pain and burn like nobody's business. It probably isn't so bad for bug bites and such either.

:D

Idaho, Maybe the One Piece Range couldbe marketed as really cool little flasks made of A2 which have a a good blade attached at no extra charge.;)
