Suggestions? Large Recon 1 vs Voyager

Alright, let's get straight to the point here, I've never owned a Cold Steel knife before, other than their training polypropylene series. I'm guessing that shocked a ton of ya'll just now, lol. So, I'm thinking of jumping on the wagon with either a Voyager Large w/ BD1 steel, or a pricier Recon 1 Large w/ XHP steel. The state I live in has a blade limit of 4", or else I would've gone for the xl versions. I've had experience with BD1 blades before, such as the Spydie Manix2, but have never used nor owned a blade supporting CTS-XHP. The closest I came to a super steel was S30V, spydie sage 3.

So any suggestions on which one to get? Maybe throw a third blade at me. Since everyone asks for "what's you're budget" or "how much are you willing to spend", I'll be capping it off at $100 for my first CS knife. Thank you all for sharing!!

i like and own many of both of those. prefer the recon due to shape of blade and ergos of handle and g10 and superior steel. both are very good a dm use the tri-ad. both bring a lot for the money. so its a matter of preference.

to many choices in that price range from all brands for me to toss a third at ya.

I have several of both and love them both. You can't go wrong either way. You might also check out the broken skull.

I prefer the Recon because the handle is thinner. The Recon is a really good knife now that upgraded the steel and the coating. It could truly be a one and only knife (not that I would ever consider such a thing, haha).

Recon - Thinner but heavier, better grip, steel does make a difference if you do use the knife for EDC. Coating is excellent
Voyager - Lighter but bulkier, harder to carry and less comfortable in pocket. Stonweash looks nice, but steel is a step down no doubt. I like the clip point the best

I would pick the Talwar (better than the Recon, IMO) and a ProLite (which is very similar to the Voyager in weight, size, shape and steel) for that budget, you can have both from many different sellers/dealers under $100.

Talwar is definitely not Tanto shape, though! :grumpy:

I love both knives. However I think the Recon is best in the large size and the voyager is best in the XL size. The G-10 gives it a more sturdy feel and just feels better to me. Like I said though, I think the voyager shines in the XL version because of how light it is, making it disappear in the pocket and blade heavy so you can whip it out without ever touching the thumbstud. Plus the extra heft of the handle makes it seem substantially stronger than the large, but I digress. Between the large versions I would go Recon 1.

I've considered the talwar before. From my stand point, it looks more like a fighter than an edc. Also the width of the folded knife, from handle to spine, looks like it might cause a problem for me in the pocket.

The xl recon1 looks sick, only if there's none of these blade length laws.

Recon 1 is definitely the way to go. I have multiple recon's and voyagers in different sizes and blade shapes, and I love them all, but for under $100 you get a 4 inch blade, CTS XHP, and linerless G10 handles with the Recon 1, hard to beat.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Just went and bought a recon1 off amazon for $85+tax. Now for the 2-day wait...

Had them both, only kept the Voyager. This was when both were AUS8a so steel wasn't the issue. I like the Voyager because it's a more usable handle, the Recon 1 is too slab sided and didn't feel good in hand when pushing hard. The Voyagers flat ground clip point IMO is a hardier design, I am suspicious of such a deep hollow grind on a hard use knife like the Recon. The handle on the Recon looks cool and all with all the grooves but I couldn't stand the super coarse G10 and thin profile. Both are super durable classics, I still may pick up the mini Recon1 one of these days.

MAIL CALL!!! One day late, but no biggie. Damn that g10 is aggressive. I love the stout pocket clip, but my pants are crying. [emoji24][emoji24]

I might get the voyager now that I have this one. Or a code4, or a pocket bushman. I see myself getting addicted to CS already.

Congrats on the new knife. Just keep carrying it in the pocket and the G-10 will smooth out after a while, faster if you are wearing jeans a lot. The clip tho, you may wanna loossen it up a but. If you like the Recon 1 tanto, and want something smaller and slimmer, the Code 4 is almost like a scale down version with identical shape. Be sure to do this:

You can take the bite out of the G-10 with just a few passes of 400 grit paper. And loosening the clip is a necessity unless you want to pay for new pants.

Not me boy. How can you justify over a 100 bucks for a knife that size. when a standard Recon1 can still be had for 62? Makes no sense to me.

Exactly what I did. But I kept the clip tight. Now my pants won't sag while I'm trying to clip a knife on my pants.
