Suggestions on Expensive Goody-Bag

Blue Jays,

The awards ceremony itself is put on by the hospital board, but the actual gift bags are funded by a private donor whos quite well off. ( it has to do with the fact that a few years ago, this mans daughter and grandaughters lives were saved in the ER, and he is very appreciative. ) although the instruction was "no regard to cost" what they really meant was "dont skimp". what I need to do is make up a list of the items I think should go in the gift bag and give it to the board, who then gives it to Mr. X, and he is the one who actually approves of and orders the items; when the items actually arrive, it will be my boyfriends job to assemble the bags, and then Mr. X will hand out the bags to each doctor at the awards ceremony. this guy has been doing this for 3 years, and from what I understand, the value of last years goody bags was somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,500.00 each. my guess is Mr. X isnt trying to load the bags with Gold ingots, but by the same token, he doesnt want to open them up and find trail mix and sweat socks, either! :)

A Sebenza is an excellent folder.

But...no fixed blade? For an outdoorsman? That seems an odd oversight.

Many, many good choices in fixed blades: Busse, Dozier, Fallkniven, CRK, etc.

DanTana,

Thanks for the suggestion on the model of Merrells.. I need all the info I can get from people who have actually used the items. as for where we are going camping, my boyfriends family has a log cabin at Flathead Lake in Montana. Im really looking forward to it as I have never been there before. concerning the goody bags, dont feel bad.. I wont be getting one, either! ;)

Old Physics,

I chose the Sebenza only because I like it, and I know its not cheap. I am not a knife officianado by any means! thats why I posted here.. I wanted to get exactly this type of information. Thank You!

Paddling Man,

Thank you.. I am going to Google Suunto and check it out! ( this board is great.. thanks again! )

Sid Post,

I myself am a birdwatcher, yet I never thought of that. excellent!

Don Luis,

This is a great Idea, however I am told that last years bags contained digital cameras. ( Mr X wants no repeats! LoL! ) as for the Leatherman, YES! you are spot on. consider it done.

Skunk,

The ceremony is February 16. as for the invite, Hmm.. I have an invite for myself, but it doesnt mean im getting one of these goody bags! :(

1 Surefire Flashlight

1 Sebenza ( I like the large, Raindrop model )

A gift certificate for a pair of Merrell or Asolo hiking boots

A Water filtration bottle

Rudy Project Sunglasses

A Sebenza, although an excellent knife (I own one...) is, I think, overpriced for such a purpose. Most people would look at one, say "Oh, that's nice", then either drop it into a drawer, give it to a teenage nephew to break, or relegate it to an old tool box in the garage. Think "Pearls before swine" ;)

Instead of the Sebenza, I'd suggest one of the following:

Ritter RSK Mk.1

Al Mar SERE 2000

Benchmade 710.

All are quality knives, but a fraction of the price of a Raindrop Damascus Sebenza. All will be appreciated.

Use the money saved to buy a pair of competent binoculars. I would recommend compact 8 x 20 glasses by either Leica, Swarovski or Zeiss if the money allows. If not, brands like Steiner are widely available in the US.

A quality compass by Silva would be a valued extra.

How about a Tilley hat?

A titanium spork?

A Gore-Tex bivi bag?

A top quality whistle, e.g a Fox 40?

A multitool, e.g a Leatherman?

Paracord, AKA 550 cord.

The list of potential inclusions is endless.

I would commend you on your choices. I would offer some additional options....

A really good pen, like a parker fountain or a Mont blanc? easily three hundred bucks. People who get them really really like them. $200-$300

http://www.joonpens.com/Pelikan_Souveran 1000 Series_pens.html

The sebenza's with names engraved. I would suggest the small sebie as it seems to reflect quality a bit better, not sure why.$300

The U2 surefire with a box of batteries from surefire. $200-$225

For the bags, I would go to the Coach line up or Fillsons and get the executive Dopp bag, nice leather, feels expensive and really useful.

I would not go too hardcore on the outdoor stuff. They may like it, but maybe polititcally difficult,

Maybe a filson brief case too? $450 or so ?

again maybe something cool and techie like a new digital camera, one of the uber thin ones from Casio or Canon?

I am used to the ultra swank giftie arena and I am amazed at the things that are available. Sun glasses are cool, but such a personal choice I am not sure if they would go.

With the multitools, SAK and the like, this is meant to be an extravagent extra, a thank you with the gifts that eminently useful, but not likely to be bought stage. Like a Sebie, a filson or a Pelikan or Parker pen.

The Binoculars could be a good choice and easy to pop a $K on. I would lean toward the names mentioned as well as add stiener. I think they make the best smaller glasses

I do not know what sort of numbers you are talking about, but if you could make some smaller gift be a bit more specific, like an Orvis box for the guy who fly fishes, or something for the one who is a pilot, or music buff.

There are several catalogues or other resources I would tap for this. PM me if you would like some more hints
