Suggestions on field expedient sharpening device

Is it still relatively easy to buy the small (@ 5") files that used to be available to dress up the points in an (sigh!) old-fashioned ignition? They were nice for filing out chips in an axe or machete and took up little space/weight.

I find crock sticks more convenient than a stone because its difficult to find somewhere flat to lay the stone down. I also like sandpaper and a wooden dowel try to get some fine sandpaper if you can to keep the knife sharp at least 2000 grit but 4000 to 10,000 grit is best(I like my knives very sharp) as well as the courser grades. . I wouldn’t use natural stones on expensive knives like the manix sebenza just in case the stones are less than perfectly flat and sharpen the knives unevenly,at least experiment with your sak first.

If you want to really go light and convenient, attach wet/dry or emery paper to the back of your leather belt with rubber cement. Now you have both the sharpening and the stropping surface in the same location.

Tom L.:

I found my last ignition file at Sears. The problem is that I have never been able to find a diamond-faced file like this (short of my Leatherman). A friend of mine swears by a diamond fingernail file he "borrowed" from his ex.

The ignition file also throws some pretty remarkable sparks from a ferro stick...
