Suggestions on how to get motivated to get back into the gym...

If you can get a buddy to go with you. If you plan to meet two or three times a week you will be a lot more likely to show up so you don't leave him hanging. He'll be motivated to show up for the same reason. "Allright, see you Wednesday." is a good motivator - you better show up.

Good points Dave- it ain't a fashion show.
I'm in the Mongo/Ren boat- also 40 & "retired" from serious physical activity. Bunged my neck up pretty good a while back so rugby isn't an option anymore (and yes Mongo- I know the feeling- I watch my old club play from time to time & it's all I can do to leave the shorts & boots @ home). My knees can't take the pounding, so running any real distances is out as well.
Long story short- I got heavy- Not bad- just a bit of a belly. Last year I had a couple of setbacks & that put me on the floor doing a few puchups/situps out of frustration. Next day a few more. Then stretching/light yoga & more situps/flutter kicks, etc. Was watching my intake- got a kick out of buying greens/fresh veggies/lean meats & started watching what other people put in their shopping baskets. Amazing if you pay attention. Watch who buys the crap & who buys the good stuff. Lost between 15-20 lbs. pretty quickly. Got cocky/lazy & it's coming back w/ a vengance. Time to start again.
OK lads- it's f-ing on. Let's get busy & lose some freakin' pounds!
Tomorrow morning: 2 sets of 20 pushups & 50 crunches. Stretch & shower. Gotta start somewhere.

Mongo

I found that an ice cream sunday after a workout did it for me. :D

The wife and I used to work out at a local gym(need to get back to it).

Developers came in and built a Sonic drive-in and a Brewster's ice cream stand next door.

Mongo,

I have the perfect idea for you, because I'm doing this myself in order to give me the boost to get going to the gym regularly.

I'm taking a vacation.

I'm taking all of next week off to do many odds and ends, but the main reason (other than taking vaca time that has been overflowing) is to feel motivated enough by not working, and getting to the gym 4 or 5 times in one week (including the weekend bookends).

If you have a lot of vacation time saved up, do it. Although, I admit not everyone is a loser like me who has nothing better to do on vacation. YMMV.

Vacation time saved up.... damn near pissed myself laughing! Komondor, I have my own practice... I don't get vacation time. My associate, who probably makes more than me since I pay her on a %, is currently on vacation all this week. My last real vacation, i.e. one where you get on a plane, do real vacation stuff, forget what your profession is, etc. was in June of 1997... aka "my honeymoon". I've had a few long weekends here and there and some continuing education trips, but no quality time vacations. Because of where I am in my business, I don't see one of those anytime soon. And THAT'S why I need to workout... or y'all will be reading about me on the news when I go wacko with a kukri or something like that.
Anyways, back on topic... today was day two of this week working out. I hurt like hell from day 1! I managed to double my cardio portion and still went really light on my weights portion. I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow anyways... sure wish I was 21 again!
Rugger... I know what you mean about those juices flowing when you watch your old team play. I wish I could lace up the boots one more time. Keep up with the exercises and diet.
Danbo... looking forward to dinner. ;)

Mongo,

You need to fool yourself. Say to yourself you will take next week off. (Since you have your own practice, you can do this.) Then get yourself psyched at the possibility of having time off-- up to a week.

If you really think you can't take too much time off, don't let yourself know this. Get yourself psyched to go to the gym, without worrying about being overly tired from working.
